Took my daughter on her first turkey hunt the first morning of youth season. She has gone deer hunting with me quite a few times and has spent tons of time outdoors with me shed hunting, fishing, etc. We woke up at 5am to make sure we were ready and in our blind plenty early on the field egde since I had been seeing and hearing several gobblers very close to our setup.
Right before we were heading out I realized I was out of bug spray so we jumped in the truck and rushed to walmart and made it back just in time. We were hurrying though the woods and stopped to take a breather and listen when we got about 60yds from the blind a bird hammered less than 50yds away from us down the field edge. We turned off the flashlight and quietly walked the rest of the way to the blind.
Before long we had 3 birds gobbling CLOSE. The first bird was apx 75yds away, another about 100yds past him and another about 100yds behind us the right, away from the other birds. I reached in my pocket to give a few tree yelps when I realized in all the rush to get in the woods I forgot my call back in the garage!
So here I am on my kids first hunt and I have no call. We sat there listening to the birds gobble for about 30minutes when the first bird pitched out in the field to our left followed by a couple hens. Shortly after, the other bird that was past him came out and joined the party with 1 more hen. We go a pretty good show and watched these 2 birds strutting around for a while when the hens starting feeding up the hill our way.
Before long the lead hen came up and walked right into our decoys followed by 1 of the long beards. He finally came in behind the hen but he got nervous and walked back just out of range back the way he came from before she could get a shot at him. Just then I looked to the right and he 3rd gobbler from earlier in the morning was running into the decoys, apparently running off the other bird.
We already had the gun ready to go aimed out the window for the other bird so when this bird came into the decoys she was ready. One shot and he was down. I couldnt have been more proud of her. 22lbs, 21mm spurs and a 9" beard.
Heres a few pics of her in the blind while we were watching the birds, when she first walked up on it in the field and her first lesson in trophy photos
