Does anyone know if anything has been changed yet? Or if it is still in the works.

The first deer in front of my son 2 of the 3 seasons he has hunted have been bucks. Last year 3 different bucks before a doe. The first one was 1.5" out side his ears. How you tell me that is right for a kid to have to pass that up. They should be able to shoot the first one in front of them.

1.5" outside his ears? How in the world did you talk him in to letting you measure it ?..... that is pretty exact.

We watched him for over 15 min. And at 18 yards it is pretty to judge AROUND 1.5". If not get glasses. I have been killing deer for over 30 years so I have some idea of size. LET THE KIDS KILL SOME BUCKS.

I am definately on the fence on this one. I go back and forth. One day I say let the kids kill anything that walks, the next day I think don't let them catch antleritis this soon in their hunting careers, teach them that shooting does is necessary and ok. Also, I agree with whoever posted before, that the youth harvest most likely will drop due to kids, or their mentor holding out for a buck. This was a good way to chip a little bit off of the doe population. I'm glad they can kill bucks now, but I feel it will be detrimental in the long run. I'm so confused!

Did anyone tell you that YOU couldnt shoot a buck when you first went hunting? How would you have felt?
The youth season IS NOT about population control, but rather getting kids out from in front of the tv and into the woods. Let em shoot whatever makes em happy and gets them "in the game" My .02

OH boy youth season just went from any deer the first deer infront of the kids as it was ment to be .To now dads/granddads preaching passing for antler worship and passing up good shots at does in some cases .There also went the part that the state NRC sold this youth season on in the first place as being about herd management and recruitment tool for young hunters. We will see a decline in youth harvest now you watch. Is it all about the harvest? So your saying a doe be killed to be a positive experience? Whats the difference between antler worship and deer worship? Bottom line is that they should be able to kill whatever they want. .

They were just happy to be out there and they understand rules. Here's to some youngsters getting the big guy though ;D Bout time!

I think maybe some are forgetting that the youth season is only two days. Prohibiting youth from shooting a buck means reducing their opportunity to harvest a deer by close to 50%. Now a lot of you may have an easy time at walking onto your hunting ground and putting a doe in the crosshairs every trip out. Quite a few of us do not. The object is to recruit kids into the sport, not to increase the doe harvest.

Heck most things in life are about the kids anyway. I'm glad the kids may get an opportunity to harvest a buck, it should have been that way from the start. It's a sad state of affairs when mentors will begrudge a kid his first deer because of bone worship.
