That's a bunch of deer! Woody, how long have xbows been allowed in the archery season in Ohio? Would be interesting to see how the harvest percentages have change with the addition of the xbow too.

Crossbws have been allowed in Ohio for 32 years. The archery hunters (vertical and crossbow) are setting records almost every year.

Well honestly it is all about hunter numbers ,deer numbers, and in the case of OH. at the last count I could find they had right at 500,000 archery hunters and IN. only had right at 75,000 bow hunters so in fact they are taking by percentage about the same numbers as we are but they also have right around 800,000 deer and we are likely at about half that deer herd number or slightly higher . So in fact it helps but archery hunters are not in fact a big hammer in deer management here and likely never will be in our state .

idk, think they promote picking up a x-bow and not a traditional bow you have to draw, because of the "easy" advantage (just like most of society wants these days.
and, btw, where is the deer season structure discussion on this site? seems like the other site is fired up

Looks to me that hunters just use it because they want to, not because someone else wants them to use it. BTW- nomally, Ohio crossbow users account for slightly half of the archer kills in that state. They also have a lot of areas where gun hunting isn't accepted well, so archery does well in those areas. Ohio is doing a good job managing their deer, both for quality and overall health. More states should look at what they do and take notes.

Methinks that the ODNR is "promoting" deer hunting. They are not all that hung up on what tool is used or how difficult one is to master as opposed to another. A crossbow is inferior to a compound bow - simple fact... States lack of allowing the crossbow during early archery many times comes from the elitist archer who thinks of none but themselves....
