Park Hunts Harvest Numbers from the IDNR
Here is the info for 2007. We certainly appreciate the continued effort
of willing participants that donate their time and skill for the
reductions. Our state parks are currently home to 32 state endangered
species of plants (endangered meaning they are known in only 1-5 sites
statewide). Of the 62 natural communities recognized as state
significant, more than half are represented on our state parks.
My hope is that as folks go over the data, they keep in mind that our
reductions are carried out to achieve an ecological objective of
achieving vegetative recovery. Though many of our parks are no longer
like shooting fish in a barrel, and long gone are the days of extensive
browse lines, less obvious damage persists. We've had great success
since 1993, but continued reduction and maintenance in these natural
areas is key in the absence of large natural predators. As an example,
research has indicated that recovery will begin to occur once a density
of 15 deer harvested/sqmi (H/sqmi) and a harvest/effort (H/E) near 0.20
is obtained and maintained.
Thanks, Woody. Please let me know if I can be of any further help!
