I would not tag a deer I didn't shoot. I probably would not have gone looking for it on my own either. We can't guess why the guy came back to look, but he did. We have no idea if he was BSing about leaving it for the coyotes, or whether he always planned to come back to look.
Assuming I had permission to search the land the deer was suspected to be on, I may have offered to help track, especially if the guy showed genuine interest in finding it. If what was stated to have been said is true, most likely I would have minded my own business.

I think the story is BS and someone made it up and put it on that site.
Seems like some folks like to bash other hunters more than they like to hunt themselves.
WHY would someone put their tag on a deer they did not kill.......when you only get the ONE tag!
I am not buying it.....it was posted just to attempt to bash another hunter.......makes me sick!

That, or the old "end of season, tag burning a hole in my pocket, freezer is empty, can't let my buddies think I don't know how to deer hunt flu"!

"Coyotes will find it"! He may have been totally disgusted with himself & did not know what else to say..... He did come back the next day to look for it in a more focused frame of mind. Can't say what I would do without talking with the guy in person.

IMHO - The author is a thief. Are we getting all hung up on the "have to get a deer" that we would stoop that low? I agree.. it was probably a pretty nice buck. Big bones on deer heads clouds one's judgment.
I see that you posted this in another forum. The difference in the polls and posts between that site and this one are amazing.
There –
Poll Results: What would YOU do? (44 votes.) What would YOU do?
same as the author 50% (22) offer up the deer 50% (22)
Here –
What would YOU do?
same as the author (4 votes, 14.8%) offer up the buck (23 votes, 85.1%)

I would be interested to know if that other site was "bowhunter" related considering the details of the story.

I would be interested to know if that other site was "bowhunter" related considering the details of the story. It is another Indiana hunting forum. I'm not sure what the make up is, but there is a lot of better than thou chest beating going on there by a few guys.

Definately wouldnt take the guys deer. Ive spent many hrs looking for deer that my neighbor had given up on. Even though i dont like sharing the property with him or all the guys he lets hunt, he would still be the 1st person i called if/when i found a deer he had quit looking for. I have found a dead buck a couple years after it was killed that i kept the rack from even though i knew who killed it. This guy was a high school friend that i used to hunt with but i heard the buck he lost was the 2nd buck he shot that morning while hunting my stand.

I would offer the deer up because I had a situation like that happen to me. I shot a 190 class buck a couple years ago...I hit him back and left him overnight. I lost blood but a neighbor found him 2 days later....he never called me or anything...he tagged the buck himself, I only found out he found it cuz he took it to the same taxidermist I use.
