My son Kyle has had an incredible 2009!!! He's reeled in great catfish, taken his first animal with a gun (dove), dropped his first deer during the youth hunt, and now....just when we had all but given up hope we went out for one last try at getting him a buck.
We hadn't been out trying for a buck since shotgun went out... but with the snow I wanted to give him one last chance. We went to a small CRP field and tried to catch one coming from the thick stuff to the corn. We set up and after 45 minutes I decided to move so we could have a better view of the corn.....that was a great decision!
We had only been sitting on our stools in the new spot along a fence row for 20 minutes when I noticed that my son had put on his thick gloves. I was thinking to myself that if one walks out, he would have to get that shooting hand out of the glove so he could get a shot off. I just looked at his hands and eased my head up just in time as I saw a bunch of antler about to walk into the cut corn field just 30 yards away! I admit it.....I spazed! I was whispering quickly for Kyle to get his gloves off, but he didn't know what was up because he couldn't see the buck yet. He quickly took them off and the big boy stepped into the field with a doe right behind him. I could feel Kyle's pulse skyrocket as I instructed him to get his shooting sticks up. I got the gun on the sticks for him and asked if he could see the buck in the scope. He said, "Dad I'm on him!!!" so I told him to click the safety off...... once it was off I told him to shoot when he was on the shoulder.....as the buck was standing perfect broadside @ 30 yds, still not knowing we were bearing down on him.
BOOM.....came the report from my Remington 700, .50 cal muzzleloader.... Through the smoke Kyle saw the doe that was with the buck run and he first asked me if he missed, but he immediately knew otherwise as I rejoiced that he got him!!!!!!! Kyle was about to pee his pants he was so excited! I don't know who was shaking worse, me or him!!!! Our joy immediately turned to the fact that the buck had staggered to his front legs, but couldn't stand totally up. With horribly shaking hands I reloaded for Kyle and we cautiously moved toward the deer, positioning ourselves for a 20 yard finishing shot into the heart that ended the most awesome season ever!
The only downer, the buck had busted one side just past his G2.... as the rack sits now he's a 9pt, but probably would have been 12 if the broke side was the same as the other. I would have been just as tickled with a spike buck, but as it ended my son will have a great deer for the wall!!!
As a Dad who has had to see my kid get stricken with an awful hip disease, it's so wonderful to see hunting and fishing replace so many activities that were torn from him 3 years ago. It all truly is part of a greater plan!!! God is most certainly good!!!!
