I saw in the New Cactle Courier this past week the buck that was taken in Henry Co. It had 31 total points with 26 of them being scorable...they didnt have the score or any other info about it. I did see the pic and it was a whopper for sure...anyone else see this??

No but I heard about it. I knew that there were deer around here like that and eventually someone was going to bag one.

Not sure, the setting sure does look like a park though.

Nope it isn't from a park reduction hunt, I go to school with a young man that lives on the other side of where this deer was killed and has several pictures on his cell phone he showed me. Its the backyard.

A deer that dresses 305 in our state shouldn't be unbelievable. I've killed two does in the last three years that have dressed out over 180lbs. One field dressed at 186lbs the other dressed at 182lbs. Both of them had heads as big as a mule. Both were aged at five and half years. Kevin

A 300+ pound whitetail buck in Indiana is rare.

The deer is for real guys,I work with one of his neighbors and seen some of his pics. Now I feel sorry for him nwxt season because everyone will try and get in on his territory, seen this happen too many times. Sometimes some good things are better kept within.

A mature Indiana buck with a big body could field dress 300lb in the early season, for sure. Not many of them are killed in the early season to get weighed. That is a nice mature buck. That area around Henry County has really put out some big ones the last few years. I imagine the party is about over.

That's a monster.
FYI, Two deer taken in Indiana's first deer season in Morgan-Monroe State Forest & documented by the DNR dressed at 269 and 270 lbs. That would put the deer's LIVE weight at 300 lbs. In one herd, the "strip mine herd" bucks averaged a dressed weight of 243 lbs.
Every year we hear of 250 dressed bucks, so I would say 300 lbs. live is not common, but a real possibility. One that dressed 300 would be considerably more rare, I would think. I have commented before about how much bucks and deer in general vary in wieght. I have seen many obviously mature deer that are around 150 lbs, then every once and a while you see a buck that is twice that big. I guess they are like people.

I have killed 3deer that went over 200lbs. dressed. One weighed 259lbs, one was 220lbs, and the other 202lbs. 300lbs. would be rare but not unheard of. just my 2cents worth.

Its hard to tell at that angle in pic but that doesn't look like a 300+ lb. field dressed buck.

It didnt say anything about the weight of him but i do agree that it is hard to get 300lbs. out of the pic...but it also said in the article that it was the biggest deer killed in henry co. and the 4th biggest ever taken in the state and thats just going by what the article says. There is alot of good area and big bucks i know of in that portion of the co.

I agree with Sasquatch. IMO, deer can vary in size much the same as humans or any other species for that matter. My grandson took a doe a couple years ago that went over 175 lbs. and I saw one on a scale in Brown county a few years back that weighed 190lbs. One of my deer hunting books has a pic of a whitetail buck taken in Maine in 1955 that dressed out at 355lbs. with an estimated live weight of 461lbs. That would be a real drag!

I think there are a LOT ofvariables to being impressed with someone telling the field dresed weight of a deer.
What does field dressed mean to you? To me it is an empty body cavity. For some it means heart and liver still in it, for others it may mean something else. Scales also vary so much, I've seen check in scales that look like they've been hangin outside for the last 20 years !!

Yep, big deer regardless of field dressed weight. Maybe one of the antler measuring groups can develop a standard for field dressed measurements so we are all looking at apples to apples!!!! Just kidding, but a good point. If you spend any time at a butcher station or check station it becomes pretty clear there are not many consistent methods to field dress a deer.
