My wife and I have a lot of lower back trouble. We always used a heat pad, but the Chiropractor told her to use cold for about 10 minutes. When it comes on me that is what I do now and I do seem to recover faster. Just a suggestion. I am no doctor.

Ice is the way to go. The pain is from the swelling, which ice helps reduce. Heat may loosen up the muscles temporarily, but will cause the swelling to get worse. You can alternate heat and ice, but you always start with ice, and end with ice. I'm not a Dr. or chiropractor, but I was pre-physcial therapy for a year before I decided I couldn't stand a biology major and switched to geology.
Hope the back heals quick - mine went out on me a few years ago, and was well over a year before my back got feeling back to normal.
