It has been a very long year for us. My son has seen more deer this year than I have, and with my health issues it has made deer season very long. My son took his 9th deer on Saturday morning, kind of a spike but with a few small points. Shot at about 8:30am at Jackson-Washington State Forest

Effects of a OBR........
When Josh hit me on the radio after he shot this deer he was not very happy......
"Dad, I shot a buck BUT IT IS NOT VERY BIG, I WISH I WOULDNT HAVE SHOT IT.......I WISH IT HAD BEEN A DOE!"
He went on about this for quite some time.....he came back to the truck and dropped his stand off and was still upset at himself!
He waited around for some of the other fellas to help him drag it out and was upset.
He has seen about 8 or 9 deer on stand this year and he was upset about shooting this deer on the LAST SATURDAY OF GUN SEASON!
It took me several hours of re assuring him that he should be proud of the deer he shot!
IMO this is the effect of a OBR!

Congrats to the young man. I would have been thrilled with that deer starting out. If he wants a bigger one he has to pass those up.

Camby,
Tell him we have all had regrets of shooting a certain at one time or another. Nothing unusual about that.
Not sure if it is OBR related or not...maybe "trophy minded" ?

Not effects of OBR, trophy minded, video, magazine induced. A trophy is whatever a person/hunter deems it to be, it could be a button buck or a spike, or whatever, its all in the preperation of the hunt and the hard work put in it. It sounds as he has defintely put in the time and worked hard to take that deer and off public ground to boot. That in itself is an achievement.
Obr is put in to help the age of the deer herd and curb the does down in areas where they herd is out of whack. Instead of someone shooting a 2 small bucks now they can take one and shoot a couple does, I am not bashing anyone shooting small bucks( I am a meat hunter to) Just choose to shoot does instead of younger bucks and to let them grow.
Congrats to your son on a fine buck. Tell him to hold his head up and be proud of his achievement and now he can look forward to next season or heck even muzzle season and take a doe.

Congratulations to the young man, I have a forkhorn hanging in my garage, it's one of my most memorable hunts.
Not sure OBR is the cause, many other factors including the stage of development in the hunters cylce. Another factor is the many, not all, televsion shows glorifying the "monster buck". or as I like to say "deer porn".

That's not the effect of the the OBR. That's the effect of a hunter making a conscious decision to take that deer. I'm not making an argument for or against the OBR, but to say that is the effect of the OBR is just not right.
Regardless, he should be PROUD of his accomplishments as a deer hunter. He is off to a great start!

Been there. Done that.
Just after the start of the OBR I took a 3pt on a snowing evening hunt near dark. I honestly thought it was a doe when I pulled the trigger. Alas it was a buck and I used my tag on it. There was a bit of regret right at that moment. But after just a couple min I was ok with it.
Bottom line is he should be proud he got a deer. Lots of folks on here haven't been able to do that this year.
