has anyone on here tried either one. Not being nosey, just looking for advice. Is it a given that if you file bankruptcy that you loose your house? Also what are the best debt consolidation companies out there. Have a friend that has fallen on rough times, and just wondering if anyone has input they could help out with. Trying to gather all the info I can for him.

If I were him, I would try to get some Dave Ramsey information, either personally or indirectly. He seems to know all the ins and outs of dealing with creditors and the best direction to go. I hope he has good luck with it. I think there are a lot of people in trouble and struggling to make it.

on Dave Ramsey's system. He is probably not Bankrupt, just needs to work out a payment system with all his debtors. Dave is syndicated on radio stations across the country. If you listen for 2 or 3 days you will have the basic idea down.

Big Dave fan here! Dave says that debt consolidation companies are one of the biggest scams out there. Yes, you can file for bankruptcy without loosing your house. Have him read The Total Money Makeover. Dave's system works and it will change him!!!!!!!

The economy, being in shaky condition, is NO TIME to be in debt especially credit card debt or if they are living in a home they can't afford. A lot of families are going to be in a "world of hurt" very soon, if they don't change their ways of spending.

Dave Ramsey is a great start. I agree with the above post that his book will change you, but only if you are willing to be changed! Some people can't imagine going without. Good luck helping him out.

Debt consolidation companies ARE NOT the way to go.
If it is that bad, file bankruptcy......that is what the bankruptcy law is for.........THERE IS NO DEBITORS PRISON.....it is not against the law to use the bankruptcy code.
How much equity do you have in your house?
If you have no equity, then you can re affirm on your mortgage (keep making payments) and you won't loose your house.
If you are married you are allowed $15,000.00 in property....anything over that and the trustee will take it.
