After pulling back many stickbows at various shops, I settled on the Samick Deerslayer recurve (45# @ 28"). Even though I am so green with the bow it feels so right. I'm only beginning and already feel a passion comin' on. I've only shot out to 10 yds (started at 3 yds) and have already moved back to 7 yds. The groups are tight but the "aim" is taking some time. Working with an instructor also seems to be paying off well. He is patient and has resourced me with a lot of material. One of the authors I enjoy the most is G. Fred Asbell. I noted in one of the books I am reading that he once hailed from Indiana. I find he has a website now but no way to contact him. Has anyone out there met him or know of his whereabouts? I really like his style of teaching instinctive shooting. What are your opinions? Basically, I'm looking for any feedback on Asbell and/or instructions on instictive shooting.

leatherwall.bowsite.com/TF/lw/THREADSx2.CFMthis place is all about stick bows . even get to talk with fred here from time to time . and as for my opinion. dont listen to everything you hear from everybody. instinctive shooting has no set rules and i belive everyone has to find there own style. if you are doing any kind of aiming at all or thinking if your holding your bow right or anything like that your not shooting instinctive. the best shooter in our club dosnt shoot instinctive ,he shoots what is called gap shooting. its when you look down the arrow and aline it with the target. when i shoot i never see the arrow befor i release. i only see the tiny spot i want my arrow to say hello too and only think about it getting there.... if that makes any sense?

Asbell pops into the Widow Wall from time to time too. On instinctive shooting, well, it's instinctive. I concentrate on a spot, pull, concentrate, hit anchor, concentrate, and it's gone. Did I mention concentrate?

IMHO -
Please do not try to shoot like G. Fred does with the severe cant of the bow. Shoot the recurve straight up. You will find it much easier to hit what you are aiming at.

I have met and spoke with Fred a few times. His company, at the time, built my bow and I have read his books. As a few have stated on here, its all in YOUR form and what you will be comfortable with. YOU will be the one to decide on how YOU will be shooting your bow. His books will give you a start and then you can refine your form on how YOU want to shoot. Everybody that shoots instictivly does it differently, you just have to find your comfort zone and stick with it. Good luck....

Fred is currently in Texas(IIRC) taking care of some medical "issues", and doing quit well I hear. You can occasionally cath him on leatherwall and tradgang
as for good books, I suggest Tony's "shooting the stickbow". He goes by "viper" on archerytalk and leatherwall. Its a very very informative book that covers about everything. I gave mine to friend already or I'd send it to ya.
oh yeah, its shooting the stickbow by anthony camera

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm actually about half way through "Shooting the Stickbow" as it was the main book recommended to me (and, wow-chocked full of information). Even though I like to read Fred's stuff, I'm finding that I'm hitting the mark better by gap shooting and keeping the bow vertical like Woody says. It seems "cool" to shoot canted and instinctive, but I'm not grouping consistently. With instruction, I find this to be an awesome experience. Having shot compounds for years, I can't get over how much fun this is - almost seems like a totally new sport.

Sounds pretty cool Trapper...I'll put that on the calendar and try to make it work. Never been after rabbits with a bow, let alone stickbow!
