Hello Woody and crew .... haven't checked in for awhile ... lost 7 weeks of the season with out of country travel for work
Just catching up on my reading here .... some aaaaaawsome whitetails and great stories !!
Congrat's to all !
I did manage to fill an early season doe tag in the 1st week in October , a young 8 point buck later in November , .... and this morning I filled another doe tag .... We have a big storm blowing in ... many hiways closed ... this is how it went down this morning .
Yesterday , I took a morning stand with Greylag at some GRCA property .... Saw two does but approx 60 yards away ... I saw where they went and scoped out a good trail ....
Later in the afternoon I took Sally for a walk and spent about an hour trimming shooting lanes and a new climber spot in a pine tree that had about 100 dead branches under a full pine canopy ...
Woke up this a.m. and noticed it wasn't as bad outside as the weatherman had predicted , so CH and I went back to the GRCA property for a morning stand .... CH was in a stand on one side of the creek ( where he arrowed a deer earlier this week ) , and I was in my new climber tree in the pine stand on the other side of the creek farther back in the concession ...
I started to question my call for coming out as I walled across the drifted wind-swept field towards the pines at approx 6:30 am .... I walked backwards most of the way just to keep the howling winds off of my face ...
At 7:00 am I was up the tree and the snow started ! ... I took some pictures with my pocket camera .
I was fairly sheltered in the pines so the wind was bearable .... ( this backdrop sheltered me )
By 7:30 am the snow was falling pretty good ...
I did my usual routine of light contact grunts ... and at 7:40 am I thought I heard steps behind me , but saw nothing move ...
At 7:45 am a nice sized doe apeared in my 10 yard opening ... Her back was covered in snow and she stood looking towards the hardwood bush .... My Vortex was already across the rail of my climber stand so with very little movement I was able to make the shot .... a 2216 with a 125 grain Wasp hit high and drove thru .... she dropped .... I got one picture from the tree before I came down .... ( she is lying behind the fallen tree with her head on the left of the small center tree and her body to the right .... snow covering her fast ... approx high middle frame )
I text messaged CH and climbed down ... here is a shot of my Vortex and Summit Viper Climber ... Only 1 bolt left in the quiver now ... that makes 3 for 3 this season ...
I walked over , brushed the snow off her and took another picture ...
Recovered my arrow , and headed for the sled ...
CH snowshoed back to my location and helped me drag a loaded sled out ... Field dressed , tagged , loaded and on the road by 9:15 am
Listened to the radio ... the storm is building .... many road closures caused me some detours but I made it home safe and sound ...
Still have 2 tags to work on over Christmas Holidays .... Should be great fun with the guys ....
Safe hunting , Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you that venture out !
