I shoot and hunt with a Mathews compound. I'm looking to try my hand with a stickbow (probably a recurve) which I've never shot. I'm checking out a Samick Deerslayer at a local shop but not sure I want to go with a "Korean" outfit. I'll be trying out quite a few bows and would like as much feedback from the traditional bow hunters as possible. So far I am looking at 35-40# bows in the $100 to $400 range and beyond that - well, I'm pretty green.

There are usually a lot of good, used recurves on Ebay that will save you some cash. I would recommend at least a 60" bow. Smoother shooting and more forgiving. Here's a good place to get traditional supplies, and information. www.3riversarchery.com/Index.asp

Thanks. I checked out the 3rivers site. Good information and pretty cool history, too.

If you do buy a used recurve, just make sure the limbs aren't twisted.

I would almost say not a used bow unless you know what to look for or have someone with you that does. There is a bowyer just north of Indy that makes custom bows in your range. There was one out west of Indy but don't know if he is still making bows.
Not sure how fast you want a bow but Cloverdale is in June and you can try the bow out there and see what you like.

As mentioned, it is wise to use caution with used bows, but that said, I'm with Decatur on ebay. Make sure there are clear pics from every angle and the seller has good feedback. There are often great deals on old bows from big makers like Bear and Ben Pearson. Good recurves age very well.
No matter what, shoot for about 45-50 pounds. More than enough with a cut on contact head, and loads more fun to shoot than heavier bows, unless you are, well, a Sasquatch.
Ditto on 3rivers. SUPERB company.

As long as you are not a small person, I would start with a bow that's 45-50 lbs. You just need to be careful about not shooting too much until you build a little muscle. If you are around 5'9" - 6' tall, try to find a 60"-62" bow. Once you become more experienced, you may want a shorter bow with more draw weight.

I've also found some great deals over the years at garage sales. Also, remember that for every inch you draw past 28", you add three pounds to the draw weight. So a 40# bow becomes a 46# bow when drawn to 30".

Ive actually heard good things about the samick, good solid bow that does exactly what its meant to. I saw a report on it somewhere, I'll try to find the link. dont be afraid of the old Pearsons, Bears, Martins etc. just beware of twisted limbs and cracks. I see some on craigslist now and then not to mention ebay. also, you can get a new maddog bow for a reasonable price maddogarchery.com/

If you wanted to drive a couple of hundred miles north, the big Trad Expo is the end of January in Kalamazoo. There you could literally try out hundreds of different bows. www.gnbco.com/expo.htmAlso you would more and likely drive right past 3Rivers on I-69>

I just purchase a Greatree Volcano from 3 Rivers Archery. I am a new recurve shooter as well, and I am pleased with this bow. Great price and great looks, not to mention it shoots extremely well IMO. I'll put a plug in for 3 Rivers Archery too, great store with great service. I drove up there for a visit and everyone was really helpful. There are some good used bows out there as well, I know where a Martin Mamba can be had for 250.00. -- 55# @28". Great bow and a good price.
