I just purchased an 11-87 smooth bore primarily for turkey. I use a muzzleloader for both gun and ML season for deer.
Does anyone have experience with using a rifled slug out of a smooth bore for deer? Or.... a rifled choke and regular slug. I only need it for 50-60 yards and wasn't sure if I should wait and buy a rifled barrel for next season.
Thanks for any help.

Rifled slugs should do the trick at that distance. Brenneke are one of the top smooth bore slugs for accuracy. If you put a set of Williams Fire sights on the gun it will shoot almost like a rifle at that distance. Good luck, h.h.

My smoothbore 1100 would shoot 2-3" groups at 50 yards.

remington makes a extended rifled choke for smooth bore that take chokes. remington buckhamers will work real good with it.

Im a fan of Remmington copper solids myself. Really I think any Remmington or Brenneke round will give the accuracy that u are looking for at those distances out of a smooth bore, I use Hornady SST Sabots out of my HR Ultra Slug gun (rifled barrel) and never have problems out to 100-125 yards, never really tested it at further distances, and i like Lightfields too.

Don't use sabots out of a smoothbore, they are designed to shoot out of rifled barrels, they lose accuracy out of a smoothbore. Also you should use improved cylinder choke.

My smoothbore 1100 would shoot 2-3" groups at 50 yards. DITTO! With Winchester slugs.

any of the remington slugs like the copper solids buckhammers and the accu tips seem to work the best out of my 870 with the slick barrel and rifled choke but then again there are major improvements in grouping with a slug barrel. those 2-3 inch groups at 100 with a slick bore can turn into 2-3 inch groups at 200 with a rifle barrel

Brenneke works the best for my gun out to 50 yds. At 25 yds I had good groups with most major brands: Rem. Win. Fed.

Thanks guys! I can always count on this site to educate. Unless I can get some quality time at the range to figure out the best slug, I may have to stick with the smoke pole.

I've shot a few deer with my Mossberg 500 smoothbore slug barrel/rifle sights. The gun seems to like Winchester or Federal rifled slugs. It shoots nice groups at 50, and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot at deer out to 75 yds.
