I am afraid we might be nearing the end of the good old days. I feel for my son as I am sure he will not have the hunting opportunities I had growing up.

Hunting is a sport that is fast becomming Big Bussniess, Well i mean it has already happened. I to think the day of Old are gone, and Greed has taken Over. Just like the land i use to hunt was cleared and built homes on, or the land that went to a out of State Guide Bussiness? I have some Great Memory and still plan to enjoy the outdoors, to my last breath. I to hope that my Grandkids Get to enjoy The Great Outdoors.

When I first started hunting you could kill two bucks or a buck and doe with archery equipment. You could also kill a buck with a gun. If you didn't kill a buck during gun season you could shoot a buck or doe with your muzzleloader. If you applied for a doe tag you might be able to draw a county specific tag but not everyon drew a gun doe tag. So you could kill three bucks and at most three does. We used to see deer everywhere back then. Now you can kill so many does that you could never fill your bag limit and only one buck. The deer are bigger because we have reduced the population. I do miss seeing twenty or thirty deer at a time somtimes but only for a minute.

when I first started, I hunted standing on a limb in a crook of a tree in HNF, down by Derby, Perry county. I sure don't miss the roving herds of does and yearlings back then, sometimes 30 at a time.

I think it is more spread out than it used to be. I think the people in my area have done a good job of harvesting does and reducing the population. It may be different in other areas though.

Im not much of an old timer I guess stands were invented when I started hunting, but I still stood on a limb every now and then. I think the one buck rule has helped grow larger bucks hunters are more likely to let a young buck walk since they can only take one now. I think the bag limit on antlerless deer is a lil over kill but what do I know. I do remember farmers lettin you hunt there land now you have to lease it. Deer season has become big business for the new young farmers charging outragous price tags to access their land. Plus the cost of tags is gettin up there too. I think the tags should carry over atleast firearms to muzzleloader season neither seasoon is even a month long. I still think that we have a very large deer herd especially where new construction has taken over in place of farm land. I hunted a piece of property about 5 yrs ago, which is now a subdivision and the deer are still there, eating up flower beds and gardens. Anyway thats my thoughts but you know what they say about opinions they are like a**holes everyone has one and they all stink lmao

1993 was the first time we were over 100,000 deer and you couldn't kill nearly as many deer back thrn. Like I said it was a max of four deer two with a bow one with a gun and a doe tag if you were lucky. Now you can kill four does in almost any county.

I highly doubt our "communist government" will ever succeed in their mission to ban hunting. On the contrary, it's Capitalism, in part, that is responsible for ruining the "good ol days". Just like many of the previous posts have noted and just like the indian tribesman's quote you have chosen as your signature. Its greed, developers, pollution, subdivisions, leasing. It's all about the almighty dollar. That's capitalism, my friends...Just something to think about.

How about; no Sunday hunting, blaze orange was not required, nailed up tree stands with wood steps or pole barn spikes for steps. Baker tree stands were sweet, if you could afford one. It was hard to find camo or good hunting clothes. If you had a pair of uninsulated camo coveralls, you were set up pretty good. The Ithaca deer slayer shotgun was the finest weapon around, and recurve bows were the norm. Bear Razorheads were the broadhead of choice. Seeing a couple deer was a big deal. Seeing a decent buck was awesome. If you killed a little forkhorn or six point people were impressed.
Fun stuff ! It still is, but the hunting, conditions, gear, etc. are a whole lot better.

I actually saw my FIRST Indiana Whitetail Deer back in Sept. of 1969!! I also remember when there was NO Sunday Hunting too.
