Wow what a difference year a makes. My son-in-law and I went to Versailles State Park on our second hunt there yesterday. We hunted the orange zone which is outside of the park. Most of the guys we talked to in our area did not see a deer. We walk a ways down a steep bank and got away from the road which I think helped us. I saw 4 deer and shot a 7 point buck and my son-in-law saw 3 deer and shot a 8 point. There was only a limited amount of shooting around us and hardly any coming from the park. Last year I was able to hunt inside the park and there was much more shooting and deer activity. Last year I heard that there was 150 or more shot on the first day of the first hunt this year there was only 40 (as per the guy at the check station). Yesterday my deer was the 26th checked in. I talked to some of the DNR guys that workedf the hunt and they said they thought the hunt ought to be put on hold for a couple of years because they were not seeing the numbers of deer they used to see. I agree.

Three of us hunted the red zone on Monday. I was the only one to see a deer and was fortunate enough to take a fat four point in the morning. Tuesday they let us hunt any zone, so we headed to my honey hole in the blue zone, and I saw three deer, of which one of my companions harvested a small doe, but that was it. I talked to the manager and next year they will start alternating every other year with Brown County, so no park hunts are scheduled for Versailles next year.

I think that is what needs to be. The hunts are not going to attract hunters if there is nothing to hunt. I know I'll be paying more attention to where I go next year. Summit Lake is near me, (within a couple of miles), and I can tell you there is not much there any more. Some of these hunts are already almost a waste of time.
