I hustled down as soon as school let out on Friday. I think I beat most of the students out of the building ;D. I had to hustle because I had to shower and load up, then make the 1 hour drive to Metamora. I got there just in time to make it "doable" to get into the stand. I was on stand at 5:11. I was afraid I might bust some deer, but didn't. I was also afraid that the place might be "spooked out", because from the equipment tracks in the field, I could tell the loggers had been in there that afternoon. Well, at 6:45, two does came out and I took one at 12 yards. The rage broadhead zipped through her and thudded into the ground. She ran 80 yards and died in the creek.
Actually, where she died is the terminal point of a logging road that runs right by my camper. I thought, "well how nice, I can drive right down to her". That nearly turned out to be a huge mistake. I got half way down the steep muddy road and realized quickly that I was probably going to be stuck...but there was no turning back at that point. I went ahead and field dressed her and loaded her and then spent the next 20 minutes in 4 low trying to make my way out. Somehow, I got out, but I didn't think it was going to happen...thank God for Fords ;D
Saturday was a glorious day to be in the woods. I saw 12 deer in the morning. The first nine deer I saw were in a parade, nearly nose to tail. There were 4 bucks in the group (none were shooters). That was the longest single file deer train I have ever seen...really cool. They passed by me at 20 yards, but I didn't shoot.
I saw 12 more deer Saturday afternoon/evening, but no bucks.
Gods creation is PERFECT! Here are a few views of life from a deer stand in Franklin County.
Oh, and one more thing...I didn't see any big bucks this weekend, but I did see the next best thing...
This new rub I found on a tree bigger around than my thigh! There is at least one big boy lurking about!
