I went over to the rifle club to try the Hornady SSTs for tomorrow.
I had never shot them before and WAS making the switch.
For the life of me I could not get them to go down my barrel of my Omega.
These are 50 caliber 45 250 GR SST/ML and they flat would not fit. I pushed and shoved and they would not go down more than an inch. I had to remove the breech plug and shove it back out.
I ended up shooting the black sabot that came with the SSTs with my 44 caliber 240 GR HP/XTP bullets.
They slid down very easily. Maybe too easily? Not too happy with the consistancy of them though. 50 yards it was a 1 1/2 inch group. That is minute of deer, but it could and should be a lot betetr.
Anyone else having trouble with these SSTs?

The plastic jackets could be oversized.

Woody, Check out this article on your issue... same problem with the sabots, and he swapped them out for the Harvester "Crush Rib" sabots for use with the SST's... www.gunweek.com/2006/feature0210.htmlI've had real good luck with 245gr Powerbelts in Chris' Optima, and they're a lot easier to load than sabots, especially on the 2nd shot on...

The plastic jackets could be oversized. These are the ones that came with the SSTs in a package. They should fit...

Try some 250gr. TC Shockwaves with the yellow sabots. I believe they're called the Super Glides. Same bullet. Much easier to load.

WW, go to walmart and get some t/c shockwaves and see if they will fit. you cant shoot 44 caliber .429 bullets in a 50 caliber sabot designed for .452 bullets. Easy Glides sabots might be the answer or you can switch the MMP 12 which comes with the SST for MMP 24 sabots which are .002 diameter smaller for tighter bores. Another thing you could do is swap out the SST bullet for 250 XTP's in .452 diameter. h.h.

Call me stupid, but I thought when I bought a box of 50 caliber 45 250 GR SST/ML that they should fit my 50 caliber muzzleloader.
They don't.
The .430 (44 caliber) XTPs did shoot out of my gun in the black sabots that came with SSTs. They slid down the barrel real easy. They did not group as well as I thought that they should.
Aren't Shockwaves the same thing as the SSTs?

Shockwaves and SSTs are the same bullet made by Hornady. The only difference is in the color of the tip. SSTs are red,,and Shockwaves are yellow. Hornady makes 'em for TC.... Get some Super Glide Shockwaves,,and be done with it. I've had 2 Omegas with the same problems. Got rid of both of them. When TC stops selling guns with the "QLA",,I might try another one.

Woody, The bullets are OK its the sabot thats the problem. 44 caliber .429-430 bullets in a green 50 caliber sabot will work or 45 caliber .451-452 bullets in the black 50 caliber sabot will work. Sounds to me you have a tight barrel and the sabots are too big. Hornady uses MMP 12 sabots with the SST and they are .002-.003 bigger than the MMP 24 sabot. Hornady makes three bullets in the same design. The SST, T/C Shockwave and the Bonded Shockwave. I think T/C Shockwave uses the MMP 24 sabot and that might be the one for your barrel. Walmart carries the Shockwave and Dicks has the Bonded Shockwave which is a tougher bullet. h.h.

Do you think those are the 12s or the 24s?

Do you think those are the 12s or the 24s? Read MMP's site and see what sabot you think you need. You might try the 3 petal EZ loading sabot. www.mmpsabots.com/Harvester crush rib sabots might also be the one. They are made in Hopkinsville, KY. www.harvesterbullets.com/sabots.htm

Go to a gun store that carries lots of ML stuff. They should have the Hornaday pre packaged sabots. In the bag there is a card that will say which bullet to use for that particular sabot. They are the MMP's, but just green and black, If you are shooting a 430 bullet get the green. I think HornHarvester is correct in his guess about the black being larger yet still being sized to take the 452 but will work better with the 451 if you can find them (451's). Or just get a couple of packages of the T/C Shockwaves in 250 with the yellow poly carb sabot, my Triumph likes them.
