I do my own.
Basic knives. Cheap Gambrels. Cheap hand grinder.
Most of my processing money went into buying jerkey drying racks.
But then, One of the main reasons I don't think I'm going to get into early season Bow is because it's just not cold enough to hang a deer safely. Almost have to pay for processing then.

I like doing my own. I also understand that many people can't because of where they live and so forth and just don't have the accomodations. I live in a 1200sqft condo. As long as it's cold enough to hang them outside I've got no problems hanging/butchering my deer.

im going to have to start processing my own deer.i went yesterday eve.and picked up my doe and buck from the processor,i didnt have anything extra made or done except a small bag of jerky and my grand total was 224.00 dollars. bad thing is around this area we have a shortage of processors.so the ones that do it charge ungodly prices .i got a freezer full of meat but im going to be looking in to the stuff i need to do it myself. Deerdude... which processor was this? pm me if you don't want to say in the open forum. --hountzmj

I get my Food Saver Bags at Menards. One box of 11" that runs $9.99 will do a deer.

If you're a Deer Hunter then you should be able to process your own Deer Probably ought to be careful with statements like that! Some are just too darn busy to process our own deer! I say if you enjoy it and got the time, go for it! If you don't mind the cost and don't have the time, have it done, either way enjoy your harvest!

My son had his buck processed by a local butcher. He asked for some brats, sausage, & hot Italian sausage as well. I went to pick it up and the guy charged $225 for one deer. I almost fell over. My son looked at me with this "Gee Dad...you're gonna pay for it right?" look on his face. I told him next time not to order so many extras. Makes me think about doing my own as well.

Between my son and I, we take on average, 6-8 deer a year.We eat every ounce of it!I bought a commercial grinder, several years back, and it has more than paid for its self.We do it all, from burgers to steaks to salami sticks, bologna, you name it! We derive a great satisfaction from doing it all our selves. My 14 and 10 year old can take it from field to table ,by themselves! The tradition lives on........

Wabash/Clay custom meats in Clay City will skin, cut, wrap, for 75$. I use them if its to hot to do the work myself. I have a band saw and 2 grinders, so it doesn't take me long if I do it myself.

The last one I had butchered I told them to make it all into summer sausage and I asked what it would cost. The woman told me just around 125.00. A week later I went back to get my meat and the bill was 225.00. I wasn't too happy and paid the bill and left. I decided that was the last time for me. I found a recipe for summer sausage and tweaked it a bit to my liking and now make all my own at a much lower cost. h.h.

I have a retired butcher that does them here for me in Evansville. He charges me 40$ and does a great job. Hes very clean and gets every piece of meat you can possibly get of a deer. He only does one deer at a time so I never have worry about getting anyone elses deer. Im so pleased I always give him a 10$ tip per deer, and its still a great deal.

Depending on the time of the year, the day, or just how I feel I will do it myself or pay someone. It is really easy to butcher your own deer. I don't do it much and can have it done in 2 hours.

Maybe next year we can have a forum where we check our local rates and post them for everyone to see. I have two places here that does it for $65 but one makes far better sausage, brats etc. This of course costs extra.

H.H.-Will check out Menard's for bags. We do buy our pork in loins and then make our own chops. Same for beef steak, buy bulk and then turn into meal size portions.
Sam's has bags too. Will have to check this out also.
I leave the buying of bags to the wife but maybe I need to get more involved in that.
With no more deer than I get it is just easier to let someone else do it. Two to three a year might make it worth while to process my own but one and then not every year. Just can not see it.
If you do not buy all the extra stuff the cost is less and you get more meat. I do not buy the extra stuff very often.

I found a dvd at meijers it was only $9.99 and it was by a chef that has several gold and silver medals for wild game cooking and is an avid hunter. He did this video to show how to properly process the deer and what each part of the meat was good for what you could fix with it. I never knew there were actually 4 different sections of meat to the hind leg, with both legs you would have 8 pretty good sized pieces of meat and he tells which ones are the most tender and shows a trick on how to tell how tender a piece is, he also has dvd`s for all other species of game and recipe`s on different dishes to fix. Really good dvd, it is put out by stoney wolf productions.
