.....If you have to ask yourself that question on shooting a deer - don't shoot.
That is what I went through tonight.
I had a decent 8 pointer that would go about 120" or so come out about 45 minutes before get down time and gave me several good 30 yard shot. Nice bodied deer that looked to be 3 1/2. I kept putting the binoculars on him trying to make him bigger.
He hung around until dark+ giving me numerous shots. Should I or shouldn't I?
I finally said to myself ,"No. If you have to ask yourself that question, don't do it." I didn't.
At dark+ he had no intentions of leaving so I lowered my crossbow and bounced it in the bushes and leaves. He just raised his head and looked, even though he was only 30 yards away. I did this a couple more times and he would just raise his head and look. OK... I'll give him the barking dog treatment. I bounced the crossbow and started barking like a dog. He still would not run.
I did that a couple more times and he started just walking off. He never spooked once. I glassed him until he was way down the field and out of sight. I then got down and slipped out the back way.
I think we have this deer on a trail camera picture. if so I'll post it later.

Yep, when in that situation where I have to ask myself I have always passed and for the most part I've never regretted it but, there have been a couple of times on the last day of season when I will relive the days afield and ask myself if maybe I should've... but then I shake it off and thank my lucky stars for the experience of that close encounter.

You are probably more patient than me. Nice job.
Now, the question is, would you pass him on the last day of the season with a buck tag still in your pocket?
That is when it really gets tough.

You're right there. I used to wonder that myself and finally realized as soon as I see the animal I want I KNOW. No thinking.
Crazy he didn't leave after your brush serenade! Cool hunt I bet!

I agree Woody. If you have to think about it, then don't..It usually pays off when you let the small ones walk..too bad I didn't heed my own advice..lol..I shot a 130 in buck this year in illinois after saying I wasn't going shoot anything less than 140..

Hope your hunting neighbor doesn't have the same opportunity in the morning. He will be a goner. I have never understood that type of mentality. I am not going to shoot something just because I am afraid the neighbor will.

Plus Woody would probally be happier that the neighbor killed the buck than himself.

We seem to have an abundance of 8 pointers in our area. Very few 10s. Hopefully they are all related to this bad boy that Woodmaster killed back in 2001.

I had a decent six pointer walk in on me yesterday, but I decided I wouldn't shoot. Hesitation is worse than anything

But it is a common place thing that happens all to often in many areas.

This buck has a death wish.
The internet weather said rain in Southern Illinois so I went up to my spot here in Warrick county,.
The same buck came out at 5:30…. walked down the field and stood broadside at 20 yards right in front of me. He even put his near side leg forward exposing his vitals better. He stood there for five minutes looking down the field. I looked down the field and could not see anything.
He is a 2 1/2 year old that closely resembles a 3 ½ year old buck I killed a couple years ago only he is not quite there yet.. One more year…..or two.
