Has anyone been looking around to see what it looks like? Do you think with the EHD lose it would be worth the hour long drive and 3.00+ gallon gas. I was drawn for this weekend. I was coming down with my son but heard they lost a lot of deer, anyone live in that area or scouted that has any info. Please inform

Mark, that is VERY true, All I was thinking was Muscatatuk one hour, 50 $ gas or 2 miles down the road and 1$ gas. One or the other we will be in the woods, or marsh (he loves the duck hunting)

1st day can always be productive in there. Not sure what kind of private spots your have to hunt. But i probably wouldn't pass up 1st day if I got picked

Thanks guys, I dont have to work Friday. So, I might drive the car down there and do a little scouting. Does anyone have any info that they would give out on where to start? I haven't been in there in 6 or 7 years. Looking forward to hunting it the first day.

Its a toss up on where to sit. It depends on whos hunting where and how many people are in there. I always like the south end. There is a bunch of ground on the south end. You would need to do a little pre scouting to figure out where to sit. also have a plan B in case someone is sitting where you want to go!

i was drawn for early archery and after scouting decided to not hunt in there . and i only am about 10 min. away. the rut was getting started but i found very little sign. i'm sure there are still some big guys in there but it just seemed to me the right thing to do was let the herd recover from the EHD.

Always worth the hunt IMO!
We saw a couple good bucks (120+) in the swamp north of the road that runs out to the east gate. This is always a good area. This is approx. where the last 200 inch deer came out of that I know of.
The other spot I would check would be the south end along the river or just north of the river along the closed area towards the east.
Hope this helps, shoot a big one!
Jim

Jim, thanks for the info. I'm going to go scout on Friday. That way I can take my little car, 35mpg verse 12 in the 4x4. I would love to get in a good hunt with my son. We are going to take lunch and made a day of it.

hey hornzilla, just my two cents, mid december- mid -day hunting is the best at muscatatuk, stay away from your car and bring plenty of food and hunt all day....it wouldn't bother me to go in at ten and stay the rest of the day! good luck TAKE A YOUNGSTER ON YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE......turkey scout

When do they open Muscatatuck for non-draw hunting? h.h. In the past it has always been the day after the last draw hunt. The last day of the draw hunt is the last day of the muzzleloader season.

I *think* they stated after the 23rd is when it opens to public.

So its only open to the public for late bow hunting since the 23rd is the last day of muzzle loader? h.h.

So its only open to the public for late bow hunting since the 23rd is the last day of muzzle loader? h.h. It is strictly bow only after the draw hunts. They do not even allow crossbow unless the hunter has a permit. That is discriminatory..

I agree Woody. Should be any legal weapon for that season. We were drawn for Tuesday. Think we are just going to wing it, b/c of our work schedules we aren't going to be able to go scout it out any. Any help would be appreciated.
