For years,I've used radios with my buddies while deer hunting. It seems I always have trouble with the headsets somewhere along mid season. In preparation for this season, I found that I had 6 headsets and all had problems. I disassembled one to find the issue and found that the microphone was all "gunked up" at the contact points near the PTT or VOX button. I assume the rain/weather/moisture caused the buildup. Cleaning the area with QD Electronic Cleaner (available from an auto parts store) remedied the problem. I proceeded to clean each of my other headset microphones with the cleaner (clicking the PTT button while spraying) followed with compressed air. So far, every headset is working great - we'll see how they do through the season. If anyone else has another experience or solution I'd like to know about it.

it's illegal to use two way radios to inform other about deer This has been debated before and I don't think there is a law on this in IN. I know some states have a law about it. He didn't even say he was using them to inform others of deer.

Back to your original question...
Head sets always gave me problems. The wire aways seemed to break. I stopped using the headsets and buy the $0.99 ear buds. Plug it in to the one hole that fits and it works fine. Then just talk into the radio like a walkie-talkie.

Good info on the mic thing... I've been using the little earbud with clip mike from Radio Shack the past couple of years with no problems, but nice to know if it whacks out, it's fixable... Jberry - here's the link to the Indiana Administrative Code regarding the Natural Resources Commission, which is where all the hunting regs are located... search "radio" and there is no listing... I believe somebody ask an ICO about this either on Woody's site or HH.com last year and there is no restriction on radios... www.in.gov/legislative/iac/T03120/A00090.PDF?

I probably should have explained a bit more... Like tagteam we use these radios as a safety/communication device. IMO there's nothing better when it comes to having the security of knowing you're son, daughter, or other lil buddy is ok sitting in their own tree stand for the first time. I've had hunts where I've had less than 2 minutes or so of communication in a 5 hour hunt. After all, sitting ther talking in the woods is not conducive to bringing in the deer.

And there was a similar question asked on one of the boards (this one or HH.com) after that one after some heated debate and the CO said that it was not illegal to use in ANY way. I can't find it right now, but I'll keep looking to see if I can find it.

Woody & Whitetail - I agree... don't know if some folks are confusing this issue with infrared detectors, which ARE illegal... can't use electronic deer calls either...
I've searched and read that whole section of the IAC and radios or electronic communications isn't even mentioned.
Now if someone is driving around spotting deer and radioing that to a posted hunter, that would probably be illegal under the hunting from a motorized vehicle reg... or if someone radios they see a deer in range and another hunter on their net tells the first guy to shoot it for him, that would be illegal under the party hunting reg.
In both cases, the radio in and of itself, isn't the violation...
I might call the deer hotline Friday and ask about this, just for grins, as I sure don't see anything in either the hunting guide or the IAC on this one...
