Last night I hunted for the first time in a week in my main food plot. I saw two does soon after getting into the stand at 3 PM and almost shot one of them with my 454 Casull but didn't because it was still early. Soon after they left another two doe came into the plot and left quickly.
Nothing happened until sundown when three doe came and started eating the turnips. They browsed slowly across the plot and one left. It was getting close to quiting time when the two does suddenly looked back over their shoulder and a buck came out, walking at the back side of the plot which is about 80 yds.
I hurried picked up my Savage 10 ML and put the scope on him and saw 4 horns on the ride side as that was the side facing me. I decided to take the shot and fill my buck tag. At the shot the buck gave a big mule kick and ran into the brush. The two doe just stood there looking around and never moved. I gathered up my stuff and got down and they still stayed there until i walked out on the path. They flagged and took off.
I tracked the buck with my light for 20 yds or so in the brush and lost the blood trail. The wind was in my face and all of a sudden I smelled him. I raised the light up and there he lay 10 yds in front of me.
I looked him over and he is only a 6 Pt but hes a 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 year old deer. This is the same deer I saw twice this season and once this summer. I decided last week if I saw him again I would cull this buck as his genetics are bad. His inside spread is 15 1/2" and he weighs around 160 - 170 lbs field dressed.
Ive seen two other younger bucks with smaller left side antlers and I think they are his offspring.
I used my ATV and wagon to get him out and into my truck. A hard job for an old fat man hunting by himself. h.h.
