Three years ago I took a nice buck and thought that it was the best hunt I had ever been on, then the next year my wife shot her first deer and it quickly took the place of my best hunting experience. This Thanksgiving with my Daughter and Niece definitely rates up there with both of them.
After dinner this Thanksgiving we got dressed and headed out to my buddies blind at 3:45pm set up in a cut corn field in an area that cannot be farmed due to a elevation change. By 4:00pm we were set and ready for action. At 4:20pm after a few rounds of paper, rock, scissors I hear my daughter say Daddy a doe, she had seen her first due to having the responsibility of watching to our South. This doe came running by not 10 feet by our blind and proceeded out another 50 yards before turning around and looking back behind her. I never considered raising the gun due to Rush County only allowing 1 doe and having taken that doe earlier in the season. About 45 seconds later I hear my daughter say Daddy buck, this time much louder than when the doe came by. This buck took the exact same path that the doe took bumping the doe on into the tree line. After he got out about 50 yards I grunted at him and he looked back, I whispered for the girls to cover their ears and dropped him in his tracks. After I shot I couldn't tell if he ran off or dropped, so I asked the girls and my daughter said no Dad he went straight down. So we waited a little while and I went looking for him, sure enough he laid right were I shot. The girls came down and we started our celebration filled with high fives and hugs. This is the first deer hunt that I have got to experience with either one of them and it was a blast. Although this buck isn't a booner I never thought twice about taking him and sharing this experience with my daughter and niece. They quickly decided that this would be a tradition that the three of us continue for future Thanksgiving Days. This buck brought my Indiana season to an end and now I will focus on my wife getting her first good buck and hunting with a good buddy of mine out of state.
