Anyone have any info on this place? I hunted it years ago, there was a lot of deer then. Didn't know if it was still good or not? Any info would be a help.

My family has land across the highway from Newport and if you ask me that place had always been over rated. I wouldn't waste my time..I have never applied and I'm only 5 minutes away..It's not worth the hassle.

I hunted it the last 3 years. There are some rules that are not common off base but it's still a military base for a while anyways. Shoot me a PM and ask me what you want to know and I will try to help.
If I had property next to it I wouldn't mess with applying for the hunt either, but most of us won't have the chance to hunt a place like that even with the rules. There are some flat brutes out there, some that will never be killed due to the area they live but there were some killed each year that would make most drool.

Not sure about the background check but when I was working there we had to pay 10 or 20 bucks to hunt with each weapon not sure of the reason just figured it to be a user fee help pay the admin fees and security. We all had some type of clearance so I don't think it was used for background checks.

Did I read that you have to attend a safety briefing this month? I got drawn for Nov. 28 and 29th, but Im also wondering if its worth all the hassle.

You MUST attend safety briefing this month. As for the hassle, was thinking the same thing. Along with a hour and a half drive...........Or out the back door of the house?

With that place being closed to hunters for years you would be dumb not to go. I hunted it two years in a row and saw lots of does and a few bucks. When they first opened up Newport for hunting there some huge bucks in there. I was unsuccessful this year but will always try again for this spot. Yes it's a hassle with the breifing but who cares.
