I recieved this today from Chad Stewart (Indiana Deer Biologist)
"..........Crane and Newport will both be included in the draw hunts for this year. More information will be included in the HT Guide next month, and there will likely be a WildBulletin this month regarding the military/refuge hunts."
Now unless Obama whoops some more "change" on us it appears we a will be able to put in to hunt Crane or Newport this year.

was wondering where Newport is at? Is it very big, like Crane or Big Oaks? I believe around 5000 acres and it's not all huntable. Located around terre Haute?

If anyone one gets drawn for Newport shoot me a message. I can probably help out. I was one of the lucky few that got to hunt there for the past 3 years. There are some brutes in there. The workforce there is probably down to 30% of what it was 2 years ago and I know the guy in charge of the NR there was really wanting to get the public back in there.
Unless they change the rules you must shoot a doe first. Last year they opened gun in October too just in case some of you gun only hunters want to know what it is like to hunt in the heat, mosquitoes, and green leaves! Not sure if they will keep that going or not.
Overall there is about 7K acres of mixed woods, ag fields and overgrown mess. Some of it is restricted. Great turkey and small game including some quail.

I got drawn for Newport the very last hunt they held before 9-11 and didn't go because of a snow storm. I cant remember if they let you pick your area or not. Did they get rid of all the mustard gas that was stored there? When I was there for the hunt seminar they were building a gun powder plant. h.h.

I hunted some ground just due east of that property a couple of years, some good deer running around over there.

As I understand it Newport is in the process of shutting down and the IDNR has a golden opportunity to possibly acquire a portion of it for a F&WA.
That would be great....

We did get rid of the VX though ;D They are still closing the plant probably getting ready to demolish the buildings. Newport had a long history of short run production from VX, to RDX and gunpowders to heavy water they used in for nuclear weapons. Most of the time there was idle. Time will tell what other short run production will go in next. The link provided above is the industrial section of the base and I am sure there is some type of industry ready to move in. You can sort of follow the fence line but there are a few spots outside of the fence that was opened to hunting last two years.

I shot my very first Deer (Doe) at Crane back in December 1977. The last time I hunted there was back in 1983, and it stormed the whole day. I use to hunt, on private property, just South of Crane, saw lots of Deer.

Newport ammo plant is about 2 miles down the highway 63 from my dads house..They tell you what area you hunt, where to hunt etc...Not worth my time. I got drawed once several years ago and once I got briefed on the conditions I passed on the oppourtunity...I wouldn't waste my time as long as the government is still in control..The big deer are about 200 miles west of there....in Illinois.

Strangely I received this last week:
Dear Mr. Corpuz,
Thank you for taking the time to contact the office of Governor Mitch Daniels. He has shared your e-mail with me and asked that I respond on his behalf. I appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources intends to actively participate in the Newport Chemical Depot base closure proceedings. It is our intention to attempt to acquire a portion of the property for use as a possible fish & wildlife area.
As a first step in the process DNR staff members attended a meeting hosted by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission in late January to help us gain a better understanding of the updated closure process. We are continuing to work with the Commission in hopes something can be worked out.
Again, thank you for writing, and thank you for your active citizenship.
Sincerely,
Shelley Reeves Governor’s Liaison for the Department of Natural Resources
I think I wrote to the governor sometime in April so they don't appear to be in a real big hurry.

As far as being overgrown (Newport) I've read that they have been burning the overgrowth for over a year now
