This is my first gun season in Indiana. Mom never let me have a gun or bow in the house. So now that I am in college am finally got me a bow and broke out the old muzzleloader from at my dads house. Have been going down to Atteburry on the weekends since have class all week. Wondering if the public side of Atterbury is decent during opening weekend.
Have seen some really nice bucks down there including a big 10 pointer that walked just out of bow range.
thanks jr

I live really close to Atterbury and I will not go close to the place during gun season anymore. I went over there later in gun season last year and while driving around my vehicle was actually shot by some of the put and take pheasant hunters over there. There were so many of them I didn't know for sure who did it or I would have gave them a word or two. I drove up to go check in a couple years ago and this was a couple hours before daylight, there was literally a line about two or three blocks long just to go sign in. I just turned around in the parking lot and went elsewhere. Atterbury is fine during archery season.

Public land is crowded on the opening weekend. Make sure you have plenty of hunters orange on and try to stay away from the crowds. The best way to hunt it on opening day is find an exit trail close to private ground and let the crowd move the deer to you. Most of the deer will try to get out of public and on to private land. Stay put and be patient and sometimes it pays off. h.h.

Do not laugh but I would recommend that not only do you wear a blaze orange hat but a vest of blaze orange also. And in my opinion a pair of blaze gloves would not be over the top. Back in the 70's when my hunting buddy and I went to Atterbury on a draw hunt there was one guy out there in a pair of blaze coveralls, hat, gloves.

On alot of public grounds specially Atterbury even the hat gloves and coveralls in blaze orange isn`t enough.,lol. Just keep in mind there is ALOT of lead that will be surrounding you,,try to do like hornharvestor said and hunt the back doors,,you may have to walk a little farther and drag a little farther if you get a kill but the safety factor will be much much higher.

I hunted Atterbury ONCE during gun season. I personally witnessed a guy unload his high capacity, semi-auto shotgun on a deer, a doe or button buck, running across a field at full speed, probably 100+ yard shots, obviously didn't hit it, guess he didn't practice with moving targets while at the 100 yard shooting range.

I have not hunted Atterbury for Deer,I've been there for rabbit and tree rats. My comments are based on hunting another FWA, Wilbur Wright, opening day there will be a lot of hunters, just check out the sign in sheet. It is possible to find spot with less hunters but it won't be likely. Also remember the Atterbury is setup for easy access, just like Wilbur Wright, so you will get a lot more hunters. This is my 3rd season hunting in Indiana, all public land, so I know where you are coming from. This year I am going to a State Forest this opening day. I almost didn't, but I am going to use a climber and get up high. Bottom line: there will be a lot of hunter at Atterbury. Good Luck to you and don't give up. Where are you located at?

Well am up in Lafayette at Purdue right now. Home is in Whiteland though. So atterburry not really far away.
Yea and I don't have a climber. I have been bow hunting from the ground and where I was it was hard to get some shots. Think I need to invest in one before next year maybe if can get some extra money.

AFAIK no bonus doea at any FWA. Neither Kingsbury or Jasper Pulaski allow Bonus Does - preferring to let all their does go to Archery or Muzzleloader.
Another reason I'm not keen on FWAs...

Certain State Forest property allow the use of "bonus anterless tags". Yellow Wood is a decent place to hunt as well as the back property of Monroe Reservoir and HNF meets up to Monroe Property.
