My 14 yr old had some chances this weekend: Here's how he explained it to me. Deer #1 walked out of the woods and into a soybean field: a doe.... he lined up an arrow: missed to the front of the deer. The doe and a few other girls ran out into the field, not really figuring out why a stick had just bounced past them. shortly, a medium 8 pter walked out. This would be his first deer with a bow: so he drew, and realized he had used the wrong pin: over the back..... the buck ran out to chase the does. Buck #2 sauntered into the field. The 8 pter looked at it and gave it the" you looking at my woman?" look..... This 6 pter backed off right towards Mason.... He missed - completely frazzled. After the deer walked off, he climbed down and went to the truck. I had sit at the other end of the farm and saw only one little buck run through... never drew on him. I did see some does on my way to the truck and wwalked at an angle to get them to run by his stand.... he wasn't there. We did go shoot his shotgun- he' dead on and ready for some redemption on Saturday. He hasn't been teasing me about the small doe I shot as much since Sunday.

I remember those days as a youth. Fortunately the "missing" has declined, but I still get that buck fever. My 11 y/o is also excited about the upcoming gun season, although I have to admit, I am probably more excited for him, then he is. Should be a good year for him, as I have seen plenty of deer in my area, and am setting him up in a pop-up blind with me right next to my bow stand. Wish your son good luck!

Even if he didn't get the deer he made memories. Good luck to you both.

When I was 12 years old, more years back than I care to admit. My Dad told me to shoot a decent 8 point and I couldnt even move, just whispered back I can't.

My son and I have hunted every weekend since the last weekend of September. We have seen more deer this year than any other year i can remember. Last weekend my son has what he thought was a button at about 15 yards in a clear shooting lane. He pulled back and before he could get his pin lined up, he hits the trigger on his release and the arrow takes off but not in the right direction....lol
He redily admits that he was shaking so bad he doubts he would have ever hit the deer.
Several weeks ago he is hunting a creek bed where the woods on one side of the creek come all the way to the creek and on the other side is a standing cornfield. It looked like a deer highway when we set his stand, the trails were very obvious and it was an afternoon hunt. I was sure he would see deer there!
As it turns out he was covered up with deer for about an hour and shot at three different deer of the seven he seen. We looked for arrows/blood that evening and came back the next day after the morning hunt and looked some more, only found one arrow and no blood. But he sure had a blast.
I just love the excitement in his voice when he tells me about seeing / shooting at deer......I told him that MAYBE those shakes will go away with more experiance, but to just enjoy it while it lasts.
He is extremely pumped for the gun portion of the season, he told me last night that he really felt confident about this weekend!
P.S.
I've also had my fair share of chances during the bow season........just can't get everything to work out. We have bought arrows twice this season!

My dad was sitting about 80 yards from my brother when he had three skinheads walking under him. My brother shot three times and all three of his arrows were found at least 5 feet off the ground when I got there. My dad had to get down out of his stand because he was affraid he would fall from laughing so much. My brother was in tears.... He had got himself two oaks and a maple....lol We all miss. And I think all of my brothers and I have each killed at least one oak. One brother got his first this year. Missed an 8pt... Mine was the sadest of all I missed a 12... But was happy to see him. Good luck this weekend. I'm sitting on my 14 yr old brother and 17 sister... hope to see one of them get a deer.

Haven't missed yet, but then again, I've only taken two shots with a bow. The first one nearly missed though. Don't want to do that again.....
camby- the shakes *may* go away, but if I see a deer coming at me and I think I'm going to try a shot, I still get the shakes with a bow. I didn't have enough time to get the shakes with my buck last week, but I also didn't see him coming until he was right on me. Can't say I remember getting the shakes too badly recently with a gun though.
