Haven't gotten to bow hunt this year so there is much anticipation for the gun opener Sat. Gun is sighted in and the knife is sharp. Isn't it time to go yet?

I haven't hunted opening morning without kids for the last 7 season. My buddy has his kids on the same schedule as I do and we had the entire weekend planned for just us. Now, we both will have one of our kids each day. Well, that just fantastic. We now have a chance of bringing home four extra bucks and 12 extra does. If we are lucky, all of the kids will get their first deer this year. Maybe the bragging won't bee so bad if they all get one the same year.

What in the world are you gonna do with all those deer? $1000 butcher bill,or if you do them urself, some VERY tired hunters. SCREW THAT!!!

Golly..
I KNOW the feeling!!! I am just two weeks out of surgery and this is the FIRST early bowseason I have missed in 44 years. WHAT A BUMMER!!!
I just had a "follow up" visit with my surgeon and I convonced him I was "healed" enough to start deer hunting this coming Saturday. I hope to hunt Firearms, Muzzleloader and Late Archery seasons. He did put a few limitations on me but at least I can go...
I have PLENTY of help for dragging out a deer and the guys are going to "baby sit" me to make sure I do what I was told.... Anyway... I am SO EXCITED about FINALLY being able to go deer hunting..
GOOD, SAFE HUNTING EVERYONE... Bud

Well it's not I have any ecpectation to actually bring that many home......WOW! Yes we butcher them ourselves, but over the last few years, no one will get near me while I'm cutting. Something about stitches. IF by some wild freak act of nature we do have that many to bring home we will be stopping by the FHFH donation locker. There are plenty of people who can use the food. With my LL and the kid's youth license, there is no good reason to not fill the tags and donate what we can't use.

I am taking out a couple of kids this year.... this will be my second year with my buddies daughter... she got a shot and missed last year opening day......but her little brother (with their dad) took a button buck.... so this year she has been practicing and has more confidence than ever.... I think she will have no problem..... Then Sunday I am taking out a 17 year old boy for his first deer hunt ever..... he is a good great shot.... and I plan to sit with him to help control the nerves..... Then when both of them have tagged.... it is my turn to kill another doe (need some steaks and jerky)
So yeah I am probably as excited as both of them.... I love the look on a kids face when they see their first deer in range... and it is even more priceless when they connect that first time.

I'm looking forward to trying out my PCR, but other than that I rarely have much action opening weekend so I'm not getting to excited. I will be mostly biding my time till most other people leave the woods

Asking because I was seriously considering sitting out opening weekend and just trying my luck on the weekdays. I hunt public lands and last year I went to Wilbur Wright FWA and it was very over run with hunters. Than again I know 50% of the deer get tagged opening weekend. So don't know yet.

No opening day gun season for me on public ground. Did it once and never again. Wait until Monday and most of the orange army will be gone and you will have the woods to yourself, other than mbogo....h.h.

Hunting on public land can be really good, but it can also be a big hassle depending on the number of hunters and how considerate they are of others. Only you can decide if the hassle is worth it on opening weekend, but that is probably your best chance to get a deer if that is the only place you have to hunt. I usually hunt private land near the HNF, but hunting as close to public land as I do is only slightly better than hunting on public land. Any area that has large groups of people hunting near by will probably be about the same, which is why I expect similar results this even though I will be hunting a property that is several miles from the nearest public land.

i used to hunt on the back side of harrison county national forest and right at sun up it sounded like an army was in the woods. we had 180acres on the back side at the time that the forest now owns. and we used to get bucks running our way on opening morning every year. so try the backside of the forest off on dixie road off heth washingtion rd. in corydon. it used to be mine and when it got bought from my inlaws i lost three ladderstands on the property. always saw nice bucks in them too.

Like everyone else I can't wait for opening day. But, sometimes a little self reflection is needed. Why I like opening day.......Definitely the thrill of the hunt. Hearing that pish, pish, pish, pish of something coming down the trail. That flash of movement out of the corner of your eye. Trying to move so slow to get the right shot. Man, what a rush! I also look forward to renewing the friendships of seasons past and making new ones. Helping a buddy drag one out or lending a hand with the knife. Stopping by a buddy's garage to see whats hanging up. Grab a hot bowl of chili off the wood stove and a cold one out of the cooler. Sit back and take a load off and warm up. Swap a few stories and remember the hunters that have passed and the ones that can't make it out. This is why I look forward to the Saturday opener. The season is short enjoy every minute of it.
