What are your opinons of using a .410 for deer hunting? Has anybody had any success using this caliber?

I wouldn't use one, I would rather go with a 20 gauge slug gun myself.

a .410 is actually a good gun to use for deer,, the slug is about the same as a 30-06, I know several people in other states that a .410 is all they use and have great success

well i have had a buddy shoot one last year and never find it and also shot one that ran well over 150 yards and was a perfect double lung.

I'll let you know aftre next weekend. I am taking one as a second to my muzzle loader. If I can get a doe within 20 yards I'll try it out.

I thought it was a great idea when they first made them legal, but had a couple of bad experiences with them since. I would go 20g or limit the shots to 20 yards or less.

I would consider a 20 gauge (Foster) regular slug as minimum for Deer size game. The .410 slug is useless for Deer but okay for varmints at short range.

a .410 is actually a good gun to use for deer,, the slug is about the same as a 30-06, That statement is false! A .410 is no were near a 30-06 in velocity or energy. A .410 slug has about 650 fpe at the muzzle. If you use it at 40 yds or less it will kill but make sure the shot is broadside and you shoot for the lungs. If you hit any kind of big bone you most likely will never get the deer. h.h.

i bought my 64 pound 11 y/o daughter a 410 as a 20 gauge was to big for her.during the youth hunt she shot a button buck broadside at 22 yards....no blood trail as the slug did not pass thru and the deer went 80 yards before piling up so from this experience i would say unless you are a 64 pound 11 y/o i would use a 20 gauge...but i thank the DNR for making them legal otherwise my girl would not be deer hunting right now

never said the 410 was equal to a 30-06 in velocity but the slug is equal in size,,a 410 magnum will bring down a deer just as easily as a 20 guage,,shot placement helps with any gauge.

A .410 slug is only about 100 grns going at 1800 fps and a 06 bullet is .308 diameter and 150-180 grns going at a speed of 2500-2800 fps. Energy for the 410 is 719 fpe at the muzzle and the 06 using a 150 grn bullet is 2428 fpe at the muzzle but the .410 slug doesnt have a high BC (which is how aerodynamic a bullet is) so looses a lot of energy quick. Most say it takes 800 fpe to humanely kill a whitetail deer. The .410 lacks that at the muzzle.
Bottom line is, use the .410 at bow ranges of 40 yard or less and shoot broadside lung shots and you should kill your deer. h.h.

You can kill a deer with a 22 rifle also but it still would not be my 1# choice.

(1) .30-06 loaded with a 150 grain power point bullet has a velocity of (Factory) 2,920 FPS with a Muzzle Energy of some 2,839 Foot Pounds. (2) A .410 3" 85 grain Slug has a muzzle velocity of 1,830 FPS yielding a 50 yard Energy of 345 F.P. (3) A 20 gauge 328 grain (Foster) slug, has a Muzzle Velocity of 1,600 FPS yielding a Muzzle Energy of 1,165 F.P at 50 yards. (4) A .357 Magnum with a Bullet weight of 158 grains has a muzzle Velocity (Rifle) of 1,850 FPS and a Muzzle Energy of 1,172 F.P. Factory load. (5) A .44 Remington Magnum with a 240 grain Bullet has a Muzzle Velocity (Rifle) of 1,760 FPS yielding a 1,650 F.P. Muzzle Energy Factory Load.

I guess I did forget to mention that the .410 would be for my son since it does not kick as much
