My neighbor knocked on my door this morning telling me there were two bucks locked together just down the road. We got down there and they had absolutely trampled this grassy area going at it. They were both tired but still thrashing around. DNR officer had to put them both down. We tried freeing them afterwards, but had freeing up one side would just bear down on the other. Notice the front leg stuck in the third picture. He had both front and back stuck in the second picture but freed that quickly. Amazing sight, but a shame to have to dispatch two nice deer. The larger of the two was a tight 7-pt, long tines on him. Other was a nice 8-pt. Here's the video clip: video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=091f3671-91ff-49ce-bb0e-bbb177c24980

Did you get to keep the racks and have any pictures of them separated? Those would of been to good one to donate to the food bank

I have always thought a CO might be able to shoot one antler to try to get locked deer apart, before just shooting them both.

CO tried that in Switzerland Co. a couple of years ago and shot the one in the head. Oops

I tried to get them to let me keep the racks but CO had already called someone to come get them and told me that person would want the whole deer and permit was for whole deer not just the antlers. My family and I really wanted to keep them since this happened just 25 yards from our property line and we've been seeing both of these bucks run our property. I would've gladly taken the whole thing and donated the meat but his mind was already made up. Kind of sad, but we've got the pics at least.
In the end I was just thrilled to have seen it in person - I'm guessing I won't get a chance to see it again.

Oh - no luck separating them, at least not unless the guy that took them cut them apart to make loading them easier. I asked him about keeping the racks and he was real jerk about it. I was going to hang around and help him clean and load them, but after the way he acted about it I decided he could just do it himself so I left and went home.
If we were able to keep them we were planning on trying to do some sort of skull mount while leaving them locked together.

What about tranquilizer darts or whatever?

once the deer get exhausted, i've seen chain saws cut the antlers, and the deer live on. They have a good chance of becoming big bucks next year due to small antlers after the cutting.

Even if you screw up and kill one, you still have a chance to free the other. I have heard many variations on this situation, where the COs take the deer. I think they'd just as soon shoot both deer if they think noone will put up a stink.

Say they are locked up for 3,4,5 days and they are both alive or one is dead the other is not. DO you think the stress from it all and not eating for those days would be to much for one or both to live?

Thanks for sharing anifong, you are a better man than I! It sounds like the CO was being a total @#$%! He and I would have not seen eye to eye on that day! If I was to find two locked bucks on MY PROPERTY, you better believe that they would belong to me at the end of the day
