Walking to our climbers this morning (left them hanging after last nights hunt so we would not have to carry them the 1/4 mile back again this morning) Me and my buddy were waling down an old logging trail using our red head lights (you know the kind that gives you just enough light to see right in front of you).... We come to a weed field that we are sitting on opposite sides of back up in the woods.... we are just about ready to split up when I see movement out of the corner of my eye..... I turn my head and there is something HUGE about 10 yards away... no wait there was two of them.... Immediately I think ..... this isn't Colorado... we don't have elk here..... About that time my buddy (like he is reading my mind) says (in a normal voice) "What the ^&%# is that?" So I flip on my white light and there are two horses standing there wearing blinders. We laugh at ourselves for a minute and talk about how we both thought they were elk at first... then start walking our separate ways to get to our stands...
The weekend was unproductive.... I saw a hand full of does and 2 small bucks.... had one doe right under my stand (and I do mean right under I almost spit on her because I did not know she was there) when the sun came up.... I was waiting for her to walk out away a little bit so i could get a shot at her... but she slipped out through the cover and never offered a shot. Found some great sign (including some rubs on trees not much smaller than my leg) the pre rut activity has really picked up here that and the corn fields being picked should make the hunting great... if it would only be cooler on my days off.

LOL! Things sure can look wierd in the dark.
Once I had an escaped cow wander under my stand in the dark. I could here it ripping up grass and stomping around. I figured out what it was when it dropped a very wet load right under the tree.

LOL had a buddy telling me a story one time about something foloowing him to his stand in the dark. Every time he would stop it would stop. He said by the time he got to his stand he was almost running and scared to death...it came right to the base of his tree and stopped...when it got light it was a dog... I was laughing and said what did you think it was ?? He said serious as can be well a monster of course !

Back about 30 years ago one night while I was coon hunting by myself my wheat light went out just about the time my dogs tree'd. While trying to get the light working I heard something big come tearing down the ridge toward me. I said self, that is not one of my dogs as it was getting closer. Still frantically trying to get the light going, boom! I am hit by some sort of critter and go down hard waiting to be attacked by Lord knows what as the light comes on. Trying to regain my composure & not shoot the rascal as I see that it is one of my buddy's 150 lb. Plothound panting over me. I thought I was going to meet my maker that night. My buddy was hunting the next farm over when his Plot heard my dogs tree and wanted in on the party. That dog never was too smart, but one heck of a kill dog once a coon hit the ground.

My messy pants moment of all time was at Hardy Lake. I went to hunt the goose pit on the pond in field 4 one morning. With dekes on back, and gun in left hand and dog lead in right hand I start walking toward the pond. I see something that isn't quite right about halfway out (its still pretty dark, a little moonlight though) It was something white and definitely hovering about 5 feet off the ground. My dog is going nuts vicious barking at it. My hackles stood up. I drop the dekes and step on the dog lead and load my gun (it works on ghosts right?) I said "HEY" and no response. THen it gets lighter and there is a Black Baldy bull staring at me. I laughed my rear end off at myself and went home.

A lot of horse dumping is going on these days in state and national forests. Hay can't be found at a reasonable price and people are trying to sell their horses but noone is buying them due to the hay situation.
