Alabama county creates ‘Barack Obama Day’December 03 2008 A Black Belt county in Alabama has created a holiday in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. The second Monday in November will be "The Barack Obama Day" in Perry County. On that day, county offices will close and workers will get a paid holiday. County commissioner Albert Turner Jr., who sponsored the measure, said he has mailed copies of the resolution to Obama and his transition team. The majority of the 12,000 residents who live in Perry County, which is in central Alabama, are black. Almost 73 percent of the county's presidential votes went to Obama. I can think of 100 other people that deserve a day before their messiah! Plus, how about waiting until he proves he's worth a dang?! Typical Demoncrat minds at work, a reward for nothing. Either that, or they know he won't ever deserve to be honored so they're getting this in before he proves he's a turd!

No matter what kind of President he is (and I pray he is a good one because we need it) some people will never change their minds.

They didnt do this because he is/was a great President ..... they did this because of what he represents to the black community.
Like him or hate him .... he took the final step in breaking through a glass ceiling that has existed for centuries.
Now, having said that .... the next thing they need to do is terminate ALL Affirmative Action and EOE programs across the country. There is no longer a need for them.

We'll see more of these types of programs!

Yep--these programs are the epitome of discrimination!!! But unfortunately, I'm sure we will probably see more of them. And as for "Barack Obama Day"...

I have to explain why I didnt hire a minority/female. Every time. Without exception. I have applied for jobs in which I get an EOE/Affirmative Action form to be completed and submitted to HR before receipt of my completed application is even acknowledged. As a female, I would actually be offended if I ever found out I was hired over an equally-qualified man because of my gender. Discrimination really stinks, even when it ends up working in your favor.

An equally qualified female getting the nod over a male applicant doesnt bother me. It is when a lessor qualified applicant gets the job based on (insert race/religion/sex/weight/looks ... whatever) that burns my butt.

That's how I feel. If you're better than me, more power to you! But if I'm not as qualified, or if we have the exact same qualifications, but you are blacker than me, and therefore get the job, that is just wrong!

Yes, this is where I have the problem...when two candidates are equally qualified and the more female/more in a racial minority/etc. individual gets the position over the other person solely on that basis. Instead of it coming to this, I would think the employer needs to make a more reasoned decision/collect more information/etc. to choose one candidate on the basis of something grounded in merit rather than on some demographic characteristic.
