It happens. Congrats. P&Y took one of mine that I found later and legally checked in.

It wont be eligible for P&Y. I had the same thing happen in the 2005 season. I shot an 11 pointer that was not found until the next spring.
I had not killed or tagged another buck but was told because I gave up active persiut of recovery, and more importantly, I took to the field and hunted again before finding him, that he would not be eligable for entry.
Its kind of like golf ..... its up to you to follow the rules even when nobody is looking.

Don't see why it wouldn't count, legally shot and tagged...

Just to find out I called P&Y and was told that I could get it scored and submit it with a narrative of the circumstances and it would go before a board. The board would then weigh the circumstances and decide if it would be allowed in the book.
So I think both sides are correct, meaning....... we don't know.
If I do decide to try it I will post something about it. I have delivered the rack to my lifelong friend and absolute artist of a taxidermist, Brent Selke, of Whitetail Studios in Castleton.
Gonna pick it up in early January for the scoring and then he will do a semi-sneak or an offset should mount. Can't decide what I want.

Nice! You can definitely enter it into HRB too if you choose.
Let us know how the mount turns out.

Is there anything that can be learned and filed away about the place where the buck was found, for future refernce? I don't know if the deer just went until he collapsed, or if he went to a specific location to bed or hide. Just thinking that another deer may end up where that one did some day.

My buddy that had the exact thing happen, his buck made a giant circle and ended up probably 400 yards from where he was shot. I saw it 8 hours after it was shot, alive and ed, a half mile from where it was shot. Like yours, the broadhead was laying by the bones.

I believe the wording is....you can not abandon your search. as in if you quit looking and hunt. it's considered abandoning your search. I'll look it up

I'm not so sure that rack makes P&Y. Better measure it first.

Hey, that's a real dandy buck, congrats on finally finding him. Don't look as though he'll eat real good though. Is there anything that can be learned and filed away about the place where the buck was found, for future refernce? I don't know if the deer just went until he collapsed, or if he went to a specific location to bed or hide. Just thinking that another deer may end up where that one did some day. Good point. Where we hunt we've found that fatally wounded deer (shot from the same stand) almost always head for the same little hidey hole in the forest.

Well I don't have any hills around so he didn't head downhill, but I have always heard that they go toward water and he was found in the middle of a dry creekbed. He was also in the biggest chunk of woods within the mile. Total yards traveled the way he went was about 700 yards. As the crow flys it was probably 350 yards.

Here is the latest from the P&Y Representative. I have edited a couple names for privacy:
MY REPRESENTATIVES EMAIL TO P&Y- Hello P&Y,
I’m an official measurer here in Indiana, and I have a question that I need some clarification about. I had a hunter call me yesterday and explain that he had shot a very nice buck on Oct. 28th of this year. According to the caller, the buck crossed onto private property that he could not secure permission to go and retrieve his deer. The hunter stated that he was able to blood-trail the deer right up to the fence. Last week he was contacted by the landowner that the carcass had been located and that he could retrieve the rack. The hunter called the local conservation officer to tag the carcass and he checked it in as his deer (Indiana has a 1 buck rule). My question: Based on his description and story, can he enter this into the record book? The time from the shot to recovery was 3 weeks. Can I measure this deer for the inclusion into the record book. My guess on the score based on field photos would be in the high 130’s maybe low 140’s.
Thanks for your clarification.
XXXXXXXXXXX
HERE IS P&Y's RESPONSE TO MY LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE-
We take each situation on a case by case basis. It sounds like the search was abandoned but if the hunter wants to try we would look at it.
Thanks,
XXXXXXXXX
NOTE FROM MY REPRESENTATIVE BACK TO ME-
I think your narrative of the events will weigh heavily on their decision. I have no problem measuring it and submitting it to the club.
Best of luck,
XXXXX

I'm not so sure that rack makes P&Y. Better measure it first. No offense, but you have got to be kidding! 125 inches makes P & Y. This buck is WAY above 125. It may not net in the 140's, but it makes P & Y without even batting an eye.

So what ever became of this rack? Did you get it scored yet?

Congratulations! I'm not convinced he won't make the P&Y book. I'd submit him for consideration and see what they say. It was good to see ya at the gun show! Sgt. K.
