I sure hope all you stick flingers got out there today cuz the bucks were on the move big time! I got up early and drove out to the hunting grounds to see how things were looking. I haven't bow hunted in a few years now. I got there at day break and decided to drive the county roads for a bit to see what I could. Around 7:30AM I saw a small 6 pt buck in a cut corn field, still too dark for the camera but I watched him for a few minutes then moved on up the road. I came around a slight bend in the road and catch movement on my left. I stop the truck and up with the binos. At first I thought it was a buck chasing a doe but soon realized it was a nice 8pt showing a small 6pt who's the boss!
1st pic is the 8, 2nd / 3rd are the 6.
This took place at 8AM and I sat & watched these two posturing for a few minutes. Then I started driving around some more basically going in a big circle on the county roads. 45 minutes later I come back around to the weed field and the 8pt is still standing there. Just about 10 minutes prior to this I crossed paths with a guy whose house is about 50 yards from where this 8pt buck is at and he tells me his wife woke him up in the middle of the night cause this buck was snorting, grunting and making all kinds of noise. (this guy is in camo and while he's telling me this story about the buck I trying to figure out why he isn't over there trying to let the air out of this buck!)
OK, so I head over to my hunting spot and park the truck, its now about 10AM, and get dressed and head out to the woods / fields to see what is shaping up out there. At first I am not seeing much sign but then all of a sudden I start seeing some rubs and then scrapes all over the place.
I must have seen 3 dozen scrapes!
Besides the usual squirrels I also saw a hawk
flushed a turkey and a yote (sorry, too fast for me to get pics) Oh and I see another small 6pt buck at about 50yds but he didn't hang around for pics either. So fast forward a hour or so as I am walking the field edges and making my way towards the truck, I spot some more rubs / scrapes and investigate for a minute. As I am heading back into the field I catch movement out in the middle of the field, I see two bucks and they appear to be one chasing the other and they quickly go out of sight, couldn't tell much detail. 5 minutes after this as I am walking the field I again catch movement in front of me so I drop to the ground and freeze, up with the binos. I sit there for 15 - 20 minutes and watch as 3 bucks chase each other and a doe around. They are mostly in a small finger of woods but occasionally get out into the field on the other side of the finger. Grunting, snorting, you name it! I actually saw the small buck of the group drooling like a fool. At the end of this show the group of deer come around my side of the finger of woods and are now heading straight for me! I don't know whether I should sit still or jump up and yell as we appear to be on a collision course! The doe finally sees me at about 20 yds out and abruptly spins 90 degrees to her right and heads out into the middle of the field. I was more consumed with the binos trying to see what the bucks looked like then thinking about the camera but I did manage to get a few pics out of it.
So there you have it! I hope this gets everyone fired up to get out there and get to hunting!
Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed!
