OK, let me see if I can convey my thoughts here.
Some "Political Correctness" is probably necessary to run a quality board like this one. If anybody could post things like "F you!" or "I hate black people" anytime they want then the board would devolve into a nasty mess that is not conducive to the kind of quality discussions that Hunting Indiana is known for.
That said, I see a PC monster spreading it's tentacles through the site and I'm worried. I don't want to have to worry over every word and wonder if it's going to offend someone.
Some time ago a well-presented question dealing with possible medical uses of Marijuana disappeared because some members of this forum freaked out and complained that, among other things, their kids might be tainted by reading such a thread. The thread wasn't saying everybody should go smoke grass, nor was it aggressive or mean-spirited in any way. Gimme a break, people.
All to often recently I have seen the words "bigot" and "racist"
tossed about with way too much ease. To me, that is very insulting. That's a serious thing to say.
This is not a Republican site, nor is it a Democrat site. Sure, there tends to be more conservatives here, because the lion's share of sportsmen tend to be conservative in nature. Conservatives tend to make anti-Democrat statements. That seems to bother a few people here. I don't know what to tell you. If I was on a UAW site I might run into a lot of Democrats. If you are in a pond you might see fish. Feel free to fire back in a more or less civil manner or shut up.
On the Barack Obama name issue, I agree that calling him an Arab is a little silly. However , I think most of the people calling him an Arab know that he is not. His name is an Islamic name. If you don't like the unpleasant feelings brought up by an Mid-Eastern name, write Obama and tell him to change it. Try running for President in Iran with the name Paul Christian or something similar. It could be worse. I'm starting to get the feeling that there are people just waiting around here ready to slap the racist label on anyone who criticizes Obama.
A lot of people indicate that they aren't overly fond of Mid-Eastern culture or the violence that as often as not plagues the region. After watching the news for the last 1200+ years, it's an understandable mindset. Nobody gets too crazy with their posts and thanks to good oversight, they aren't allowed to do so. Get over it.
The lines in the PC wars are blurry, but here is the way I see it:
Pointing out Obama's background doesn't make you a racist.
Pointing out that he's not really that black doesn't make you a racist.
Pointing out something wrong that happens to be occuring in a different culture does not make you a bigot.
Pointing out a fault in a person that happens to be a different race than you does not make you a bigot.
Also, here is a bulletin for everybody:[/ ]
Get a thicker skin for crying out loud. Not everybody agrees with you. This does not make you good and them bad or vice versa. From the One Buck Rule to Barack Hussien Obama, opinions vary. If you want 100% fuzzy, feel-good talk, go watch Mr. Rogers and shut up.
I know I went a little long but I am curious if anybody else is getting the feeling I am that the PC beast might be getting off the chain. I think Woody & Co. do the best they can trying to keep everybody happy. Maybe we can make things easier by not being so sensitive or ready to label each other. If you think I'm wrong, tell me.... I can take it, and that's the way it should be.
