Savage, The front base screw may have well been the bugaboo all along, I tore it all down again yesterday afternoon and installed a third set of bases, Weaver style. All have said that they were Savage compatible, but when I took off the one on it yesterday the front screw turned really easily, much to easily. This told me that it some how it had lost its hold, until I bought a foot pounds torque screw driver I usually tightened until they don't turn. Anyway I made up 15 shots at 40G of 5744 and am going back to the range to play. If someone has a chrono and time to kill I would not mind knowing what type of performance that load will give with using the 250 Shockwave. Actually if it prints good I will be happy anyway, because I know that it should be good on a deer sized animal out to at least 80 yds which is maximum for where I hunt. Hick, Even if they say they are compatable you gotta check that front base screw.I do not know if you had a typo or not about a foot lbs torque wrench, but you should be using a in. lbs. wrench. The load you mentioned should clock around 1900fps.You would be good to go to 150-175 yds. Also bear in mind that the closer you get to bore size with your bullet, the better the accuracy.Have you tried any Barnes Originals in .458 or Remingtons in .458?Both are 300 grn pills. These 2 bullets pared with either the Harvester Black Crush Rib or MMP Orange have proven themselves time and again to be superbly accurate in a no. of Savages.

Checked the new bases screws without the base, these new screws are visibly shorter than the older ones. when inserted into the front the screw will tighten down to the neck of the screw or the last thread depending upon how you wish to say it. If this doesn't work then I will get out the course whet stone and hone it down at least one thread. Wifes gonna love that sound. LOL Using foot pound probably shows my ignorance between my Wheeler fat driver and my 1/2 Craftsman Torque Wrench. Only thing that I am positive of is if I set it at 25 it clicks at that setting. But without going to the gun safe and going thru all of that I think it may well be inch pounds. Bottom line new toy nomenclature still not learned. After I get to shoot this new set up. Probably tomorrow I will let you know of the results; hopefully they will be good.
