Hard to believe they'd be that aggressive into fighting already... Fight to the death Two large male whitetail deer locked antlers sometime early Wednesday. One lost its life due to injuries sustained in the fight. The other, a 13-point trophy buck, succumbed to stress and exhaustion later that day. Cass County resident Mike Grandstaff discovered the ongoing struggle just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday. When he did, he realized the two were entangled. Grandstaff called authorities, who tranquilized the live deer. They had to cut one of its antlers off to free it. What follows are photos of how authorities attempted to save the life of the 13-point buck. Photos here as well. Several in the gallery. www.pharostribune.com/local/local_story_261180403.html

It might have been a spirited sparring session that sprung one point over another. I'm sure bucks have been shoving each other around establishing dominance. What a shame!

I saw four basket racks in a soybean field yesterday. I was kinda surprised to see them together this late in the year.

Sad, but A small percentage of even healthy Animals tranquilized die. Whitetail Deer don't do well when tranquilized. They tend to develope Hysterical Paralysis and die. While in college; our Wildlife Biology Class captured some Deer at LBL (Land Between The Lakes), in a cannon net, and we ear taged them. We gave them each an injection of Diazepam (Valium) to calm them down so we could work on them. This dosage was light but when we released them, they staggared about for several minutes. We also blindfolded them.

I would guess that it was just play type sparring that caused the hang up. I've seen hard antlered bucks run together up until the weather cools and they really start feeling their oats. Any time that hang ups happen is a shame.
