A little bit of a rant that more than a few of you will relate to. Helped out a land owner quite a bit here recently that has a good area to hunt. Came around time to ask for a return on the favor, "I would if I could, but this guy pays me 3k a year to hunt this little bit of river bottom, he guides people from all over". I know better people and should be happy with what I got, but this one stings a bit. Second time it has happened this year, really trying to find close ground to save some gas money. Makes me look forward to the day when I buy my own ground. It wears on ya.

Yeah it does sting, and I know how ya feel. I am sorry that this happened to you. That's all I'm gonna say becouse this is a matter that I could rant and rave on for days. It hurts, it raises your temper to the point of spontaneous combustion. But like you, I am just waiting for the day that I pick and choose who hunts on my land. I hope that one day you can acquire the best hunting grounds in your area, and then, well that will be the day that it comes full circle and you can say NO HUNTING.

Sounds like the time to ask was back when you decided to help the farmer out in the first place. He would have told you that he leases his land. Then you could have decided to help him anyway, or not to, without any expectation that you'd be "repaid".
Maybe you can still ask about turkey hunting or some other hunting like geese, rabbit, etc.
The guy that leases may move on in time, and you'll have a foot in the door.

It sucks that that happened to you. This is just going to become a more common thing as time goes on. I am going to be buying all kinds of land once this Nigerian lottery money gets over here to me : )

Deer hunting will come down to:
1) Own your own place
2) Lease ground to hunt on.
3) Hunt public ground
4) Stay home
Facts of life......

Yeah..Facts of life...but I tell you it sucks!!!!!!!!!! Greed I think is the biggest part of the fact, what's wrong with letting a person hunt on your land if for one thing he's a good hunter, hunts by himself, helps you out with your chores, etc. I think for the most part people won't let you hunt but yet their the first ones to about to many deer, deer damaging crops, deer on roadways,etc..........come on!!!!!!!!!!!

Deer hunting will come down to: 1) Own your own place 2) Lease ground to hunt on. 3) Hunt public ground 4) Stay home Facts of life...... Absolutely - hunting is BIG business! A friend of mine and I used to get into heated arguments about leasing. He was all for it. He and some associates had a good duck lease near Memphis. I think they had put quite a bit of effort into the lease. But.... someone came along and offered about 10 times the rate they had been paying.... They are no longer on that lease.

Hunting shows started touting leases 10-15 years ago. Managing your own property to hold deer. That was back when you could knock on 3 or 4 doors and get a place for yourself and a couple of others and everyone was doing fairly well. But you knew that the end of the free hunting was in site. Money was going to drive the poorer hunter out. Good thing we have Pittman Robinson so that the non rich have a place to go. Public lands. That is where I spend most of my hunting time now.

That sucks, I am very fortunate and thankful to have 800+ acres pretty much within walking distance from home this year. So, its not all doom and gloom just yet. Keep trying, something will come along.

It's so awesome growing Booners behind every tree! You reap what you sow! Huge antler lust is going to cost us all eventually.

I'm sure it has some to do with antlers, but this was more about greed. The day that I have to pay to hunt on Indiana ground I will gladly hunt public (as I already do).

When Hunting is Outlawed by the PETArds because there simply not enough (non elite/rich) hunters to care any more these jerks will only have themselves to blame. Some things are more important than money. All the more reason to pray for the utter economic/sociological collapse of the shell of what used to be the US... Ragnarok & Roll...

I think I'm going to be sick. When Hunting is Outlawed by the PETArds ...... I'm certain there are elements at work to outlaw all hunting, but there may be other threats. What about people buying hunting leases and not hunting? The shared price of a lease is not very much when you have a bunch of people contributing to the cost.

Those were some interesting takes on this. I wonder why someone would pay 3K to hunt a piece of riverbottom in Indiana. I would definitely keep helping this land owner and staying on his good side. This guy may not show up or may not like what he see when he does show. I bet it will be available next year again.

I feel very fortunate to have 70 acres to hunt that my God-parents own. I am the only one they allow to hunt and I pretty much get to do what I want as far as building stands, planting food plots and so forth. What I know from past experience with hunters that my God-parents used to let hunt on their land is that the hunters didn't respect the land. They left trash laying around, came driving their vehicles at ridicules hours of the night (spot lighting I am sure), they would drink beer by their vehicles then head out for an evening hunt. Heck one guy went as far as to tell my God-father he needed to harvest his corn because he was screwing up his hunting by still haveing it in the field. Now I know that 95% of the hunters out there do not act and do this stuff, but it only takes one or two to ruin it for a whole lot of others.
This is why I am the only one allowed to hunt now. Heck I can't even bring someone with me (other than my daughter) and I am like their son. I am not making excuses for why land owners who charge to hunt their land. I am just saying some land owners probably have had a bad experience with a hunter(s) in the past and so they would rather not let someone hunt or charge them for it if they do.

I don't blame the farmers one bit, so I sure wouldn't call it "Greed". I think their lively hood is way more important than our hobby!

Greed may play a small part for some, but by far its just another way a farmer can make money off his land remember his land is just like your job thats how he makes his money if he can pick up another 3K to offset some of his fuel cost taxes new eq, why would you not? Yes it may suck but he's not in it for his health either just like you he's trying to make money retire and take care of his family.

I don't blame any farmer for taking lease money. It is his property and he should get something out of it. It used to be that a helping hand was usually good enough. Now those with the ability to pay are running out the small guy. As for getting together with several others and leasing, that can work but only if all parties agree on how things should go. Kind of like when I first started hunting with some guys from work our group started out with 6 people in it. Not a great number and it did make for a hunting camp that no one had to extend themselves with camp chores. If everyone helped out decently. Not everyone did. After a couple of years 3 dropped out leaving the 3 that did the most and got along the best. Simple rules like no alcohol in camp or in the hunting area are not agreeable to everyone.

Like Larry said keep your chin up my friend. I had private land in Jennings and brown county to hunt for years all family owned or friends of family. They ended up passing away and the lands sold by their kids because they didn`t want to take care of it. I had to hunt public ground for a long time but I never quit trying to find some private land. Just keep asking around and you will find someone to let you hunt,,and it may be better than the river bottom land.
