Current rules state 15 and younger. As the father of a 6 and 14 year old I think this needs to be changed to 18 or 19. Give them a few more years without having to wait until the pressure is on. I have talked to others that feel the same way. Steve

I didn't like the age limit when the season was established and I still don't.
First off, if you are buying and hunting with a youth hunting license, don't that mean you are a youth?
I think the age limit should be 17 and under, and if your older than that, you should also be required to buy regular (adult) deer tags.
I heard one person say last year, "the age limit is 15 because we don't want kids driving themselves to the hunting spot"
However the rules clearly state the the youth MUST be escorted or supervised by an adult......so if a 16 year old takes off in the old man's truck for a solo hunt during the youth season......the youth is in violation for not having an adult with them.
What about 15 year old kids who live out in rural areas already, kids who don't need a vehicle to get to their hunting spots?
Here is the bottom line......there is a certian segment of deer hunters in Indiana who didn't want anything to do with a special youth deer season. Youth deer seasons are NOT new ideas....yet Indiana didn't start one till 2006.....many other states have had youth deer seasons for many years.
The IDNR reconizing the group(s) that wished there was no youth deer season came up with a proposal they really couldnt protest.......ANTLERLESS ONLY AND 15 AND UNDER!......how could you say no?
If your hunting with a youth license, then you are a youth!!!!!

We could have filled up our Youth hunt easily last year if the agfe was 17. I would like to see it raised also.

There are contradictory "youth" terms in the regulations.
One is for statewide general seasons and one is for the "youth hunts" (fall deer and spring turkey).
IMO - They should be made the same - one way or the other.

Maybe 17 should be the top age, I honestly do not know. But I do believe that 18 or 19 is way to old. There should be no pressure applied to them to get a booner buck, any deer taken by a hunter that is 16 or older should be considered as a trophy no matter what it is.
I am guessing that the IDHA is the group being referred to, what with their trophy ideals what they wanted in highly understandable. Maybe it is once again time for those of us that do not belong to that organization to start lobbying the DNR as to what we feel youth should be able to harvest.

A youth hunt should be for anyone who holds a youth license, period This is another example of an unnecessary, confusing regulation. I'm betting there are dads taking out their kids who are not even aware there's an age restriction. Common sense flew out the window on this one IMO.

I agree that 18 and 19 YO are too old for a youth hunt. Even with a youth licence you can be 18. I'm with Woody, whatever it is it should be consistent with all seasons/game.

The 15 age on youth hunts comes from the youth waterfowl hunt. 15 is the cut off for that because at 16 they have to have a Federal Waterfowl Stamp, and just the Sate Licenses wont cover them. I see no reason why the age should not cover everyone hunting with a "youth" license. Just a little insight as to where the 15 came from.

Thanks for the good replies. The info in the post (either sex for youths) on neighboring states was great too. I would like to see the season latter like after the mosquitoes have died off.

Reasoning i heard was because the DNR wants this to be a family style hunting whether it be father/son , father/ daughter.. so on.... They dont want a car load of 16 year olds out runnin around huntin unsupervised so to speak. I see both sides of the issue myself.... no real opinion however

I see both sides of the issue myself.... no real opinion however That was the excuse (hard to say it was a reason) that I heard too. Since the regulation requires that a a mentor 18+ be with the youth while hunting doesn't that kind of put that "reason" in it's place? I think it is great that we are getting some 8 year olds out there, but I don't think we should cut off at 15. The two youth regulations are contradictory. I'm quite sure that some 16 year old youths sporting a youth licenses hunted the last youth hunt.

They dont want a car load of 16 year olds out runnin around huntin unsupervised so to speak. Yea they addressed that by saying that the youth must be supervised WHILE THEY ARE HUNTING!
