A buddy just got me a deal through Remington on a 23" cantilevered fully rifled express barrel for my 12ga 870 express. ($160!!)
Anyone use red dots on yours and or what are your favorite slugs for it?
Lets see some photos!!

I don't use red dot's and I'll probably get burned at the stake for saying this but I find that the Hornady SST's are AWSOME. All the material I've found says they're accurate up to 150 yards but I've got mine zeroed at 100 yards and can put bulllets through the same hole. In my opinion there is no better combination of a slug and slug barrel. Now let the argument begin, I'm sure there is someone who disagrees or thinks the Hornady's are too much to pay. Bottom line you get what you pay for in guns, ammo, and optics. JMHO

I bet Decatur will post his standard admonishment about the lack of pictures!
I am curious to see if red dots will hold up to the punishment dealt by slug spitters...

I wish mine would put them through the same hole at 100 yards ......
I have an 1187 with the cantilever rifled barrel and a Leupold scope. I tried every slug I could get my hands on (didnt try the SSt's because I couldnt find them anywhere) and found that the Remington Buckhammer shot the best. It grouped about 3-4" at 75 yards.
I went to my local wal-mart and rural king and bought a box of everything they had .... took them home and shot 3 shot groups from a bench just to see what grouped the best. Unless you do that you will never know which is the best .....
As for the red-dot .... I have had one on my Mossy 500 I use as a turkey gun for about 10 years now and it seems fine. But that is not really an apples to apples comparison because a wandering zero would be really difficult to notice or diagnose using 5shot instead of a slug.

I'm a Remington fan through and through! I have an 870 and an 11-87 both with Leupold scopes on them. I've hunted with the 870 since 1986, and it never has failed me. Picked it up for a song brand new in a pawn shop in Idaho Falls while I was stationed there. An overweight duck hunter fell on her and cracked her along the pistol grip. Two pins and a little acraglass, and she was like new again. ;D I started shooting Copper Solids and they consistently grouped under three inches at 100 yards. Now after the third or fourth modification they don't shoot nearly as well as the original coppers that had the four petal noses that split off at 90 degree angles. The 11-87 got pushed further back in to the gun safe as a back up to the back ups because I think the darn things are too heavy to lug around and don't seem to swing as smooth as an 870. I've been meaning to try the buck hammers and the new poly tipped Remington slugs, but I got side tracked working up loads for my new Marlin in 41 mag. Good shooting!

You'll find those red dot scopes aren't real handy when you discover after walking a half mile to your tree stand that you left the thing turned on last trip, and now your batteries are dead. Seriously .... why depend on batteries. Get a good Leupold scope. You'll be able to shoot better because the optics are much better and you can see more clearly. Also, you want heavy duty rings, no cheapos. For slugs in a rifled barrel, I am a firm believer in Federal Barnes, copper expanders, 2-3/4". The only other I found close to that in the accuracy department was Remington copper solids, but I've not shot them for a couple years now.

I have the same gun with the 21" barrel and the Hornady SST's grouped with the best accuracy out of five different saboted slugs I put through it. However, I went with the Remington copper solids, because the accuracy loss was irrelevant at the effective range of both rounds and I found the recoil of the Hornady to be so incredibly brutal I didn't even want to pull the trigger! The Remington has a little milder recoil. It's a moot point now though, as I stored away the 12 gauge slug barrel for posterity and took to carrying the wondrous .44 mag. PCR rifle.

At $14.99 for 5 the SST's are bad enough..... The Remington AccuPoint's are $19.99 for 5!!!! GASP!!!!
I Think I will also stick with the copper solids.

I have the same 870 with rifled barrel. Mine has the open sights and saddle scope mount. The sst ammo is the best for mine.
I have put this gun away for awhile. It just kicks too much for me to enjoy shooting it. I am using a NEF 44 mag single shot this year.

Heh, heh I'm seeing a pattern here. I have a Hasting cant. fully rifled barrel for my 870 - used a low powered scope on it so I can't help you. I've retired it as well. I'd much rather shoot my 30-06 Encore handgun than that thing let alone a PCR or one of my light recoiling Encore barrels.

I have a Hastings barrel on my 870 and have tried all sorts of slugs over the past 20+ years and settled on the sst. It shoots the flattest and groups the best for me. Also performs very well on knockdown power, never lost one that I hit yet.

I retired my 1100. $15.00 abox slugs and enough recoil to break a boxers jaw. No thanks. I bought a new 460 S&W Katahdin barrel last night. Shooting the 454 Casull out of it.

I have a 870 & 11-87 with cantilever scope mount barrells. I shoot the SST out of them and they group great. I love the preformance to.
To me the extra cost of the slugs are worht it. Once I sight it in I'll only shoot it a couple a times a season so 75 cents more a slug wont kill me.

I have a 1100 and an 11-87. they both like copper solids. Buckhammers group well also but rattle my teeth. I couldnt get the sst to group with either gun....the recoil is brutal! I would like to try the new accupoints and might even try lightfields if I find money growing on the trees in my backyard. Otherwise my new H&R 44 mag will be walked often.
