Is a 308 in a contender legal for deer in Indiana? If so whats a good range to zero the scope? Also how bad is the recoil on one with a 12 inch barrel?

You better not try a .308 in a Contender. An Encore, yes, Contender NO. To answer your first question, in pistol format a .308 is legal. Second question would be answered by you and the ranges you typically encounter. I probably wouldnt zero much over 150 yards for just about anywhere in the state... As for how bad the recoil is, I couldnt say. The longer the barrel, the more weight, the less recoil. dbd870 has a .30-06 in an Encore and can help with that, since he downloads to .308 levels. I think Deertracks also uses a .308, and maybe a couple others on here do to.

Recoil is a subjective thing but I don't find the recoil objectionable, although you could back down in power and still have a fine whitetail handgun. I have a 15" standard taper so mine is not heavier than normal. Now you will need to put some range time in to learn the weapon. If you're looking for a deer gun the 308 is really not necessary, but certainly will work. If you want 150yds & in I'd opt for something like a 35rem (which in fact is the barrel I'm going to use for IN this year), 30-30AI or 7-30 Waters (OK single shooter I agree the Waters is good farther out than that!) or for a longer range gun something like the 25-06 or 6.5-284 would work very nicely. Some of those aren't factory rounds but MatchGradeMachine has had pretty good turnaround times, you probably have time yet, if you go custom and they make a very nice product. There are some odds and ends in stock there, at Bullberry and Ed's as well. If you're thinking of a dual purpose barrel for Elk as well then something like the 06 comes into it's own. I have all my barrels zeroed at 100 right now, but I'll probably make a trip north where I can get 200yds and zero the 25-06 for that. Like I've posted before I hunt western KY also and I can get some distance down there. Eh, the 308 is a fine round get one and then start building your collection - you just can't have too many barrels!

I happen to have an encore in a 308, but I have a 15" barrel. I have had a 30 06 in an encore and unless you reload and can make your loads more tolerable, I don't recomend a 30 06. I reload and take my loads down a few notches even for my 308. It is a fine caliber for deer and if you can handle the recoil on factory loads or reload yourself you will have yourself a fine weapon.

There are factory reduced recoil loads available in both 30-06 and .308. h.h.

It could be a great deal if the gun is in excellent condition or if it's in good condition with a great scope.

For an Encore, I'd have to say that's definately in the ballpark. If it's a good scope, that's a great deal, like dp says.

Any pistol with >= 4" barrel, .243 or larger and case 1.16 or greater is legal...
I've not gotten into the hand cannon game, but the .243 or something like a .257 Roberts would have plenty of punch for deer, but wouldn't have the recoil of the .30's...

I don't know about a great deal, but that's ballpark for sure. That's what I paid for my .270 Encore pistol with a 4x EER Leupold, 5 boxes of ammo, and a set of FL RCBS reloading dies 5 years ago. I really don't believe they go down in value much either. They are fun tools!

Well, I'm a new daddy to a fine handcannon. Its a 15" barrel in 308, 2x7 Leupold with extra grip and forearm, and holster. The gun is in great shape. And its calling for RAIN ALL WEEKEND.........Also the guy came down alittleon the price, so now I need to go get ammo. What about some 150 grain to start with? They did have some 125 grain that said 50% less recoil? I dont know thinking about going with the 150's and hanging on.

The recoil of my .308 Encore pistol has a bit of a bite slinging 150 grs. of lead down range & it is very lethal on deer. 100 yards max. for me with a shooting stick. Oh yeah, if you are going to be shooting multiple rounds per setting get some padded shooting gloves.

I have a 308 barrel for my Striker but havent put it on yet. Those 125's might be the ticket if you are recoil sensitive. A brake would be another option. good luck and have fun! h.h.

Sounds like a very nice setup, congrats! The weather is looking like a real bummer. I think you'll be able to handle the 308 with 150's with a little familiarization - that should make for a deadly combination and will make for a fine long range gun as well. I'm not particularily fond of heavy recoil and I was surprised at how controllable a gun like your 308 is. Another option if you don't have them on there already is a set of Pachy's decelerators.
