My partner just got permission from a guy he works with that farms alot of ground out in Rush county near Rushville, we are going to set up trail cam and do some looking around. The guy said the deer are completely tearing up his crops and he has seen 15 different bucks since winter and countless does, I can`t wait to get in that woods,,FINALLY got some decent private land to hunt ! ! Nothing against public land as I still have 2 spots I will be hitting but will be nice for a change to not have 20 hunters tromping around under my stand

Now is the time to hit that area before it gets totally burned out. A buddy of mine has been on some nice ones around there the last few years. There is no telling what you might see.

Unless you just can't keep away from that public land spot I'd be trying to find all I could out about that new spot. I hunt public land almost exclusively and if I had a spot like you just described I think I'd be paying a visit asap andevery weedend all the way up to opnening day to try to figure some stuff out. GOOD LUCK!

Rush county harbors some giants. It's next to Decatur, and those little woodlots between large, flat fields harbor some bigguns, you can bet. Good luck.

Trying to deliberatelyl screw your self and your buddy that helped you? What have you had the spot? A few days now and this is the second internet messege board I've seen you posting your new spot and the county where every one can run and get private land to hunt that's full of bucks. So far it's 2 for 2. Wanna bet I find it on at least one or two of the other messege boards I check in the next 30 minutes? This is exactly why I hunt almost exclusively by my self. Hello Mr. Base Camp Leasing. Welcome to Rush county.

Hello Mr. Base Camp Leasing. Welcome to Rush county. Not sure how you can figure I am screwing myself or my buddy considering the fact that the friend that owns the property has anyone he see`s on it arrested for tresspassing and we are the first ones he has allowed to hunt the woods on his families 800 acre farm, yes I did post it on another hunting site, sorry if he and I both are excited we have a great prospect for once. But with any internet forum you always have the option to not read each post if you feel inclined.

congrats. But....if ya go trekkin all over the place every weekend till season, there wont be any deer in there come Oct. These woodlot deer around here wont tolerate much intrusion at all, especially if its someplace that doesnt get bothered much. Do some "scouting" with google earth first, spend a weekend at most placing stands and scouting then get out and stay out!. Trust me on this, I've hunted these Shelby,Hancock,Rush county farms all my life, it dont take much at all to bump em to the next woods.

Thanks for the good advice, it has been a long time since I had any private land to hunt am really looking forward to this. There is a total of 4 12-15 acre wood lots we have the run of, we didn`t spend alot of time in the main patch. We got descented real good and walked the outer perimeter just looking for sign, found a line of about 30 buckeye trees that were full, then just inside a corner edge we found a dustbowl with ALOT of turkey sign,,I found a small clearcut in the NW corner that bordered 3 bean and corn fields that made a triangle funnel right into it and set the trail cam up facing the 3 fields. Am going back saturday morning to do some squirrel hunting and check the trail cam and see whats happening right at daylight. My buddy works thur-sunday but it was funny that the farmer and I had met about 10 years ago and he welcomed to hunt anytime I wanted so that was a good thing, once I get a travel route between the fields figured out will get the stands in and leave them till season opns so the deer get used to them.

I'd say the word has been out for a while unless you are a trophy hunter living in a cave. It is good he has such a big chunk of ground because the pressure has been increasing the last couple years and it has about peaked. Neat to hear of the turkey sign, they have a hard time around there!

Hoosier - congrats and good luck with your new spot!
Like trapper said, aerials and also study topos of the place... I'm always amazed at how in ol' flat Hamilton county, deer will take advantage of the smallest swales and fencelines for cover...
BTW - JR is right... I've about broken the cipher you used in your original post which contained the GPS coordinates for the place, but I promise I won't divulge the location...
Jack, you just keep all those positive thoughts coming...

Jack, you just keep all those positive thoughts coming... Not a problem at all kirk old buddy. I'm just watch'n for ya to start post'n up all yer buddy's hunt'n spots. If they are in a county with more than one river could you let us know which one they are closest to along with the county and a little description of the wood lots. Thanks Kirk, yer a real pal.

Jack - don't you think that folks like Base Camp leasing and other groups read the annual harvest figures and HRB stats for each county? Or know how to use GIS aerials and parcel maps?
Hoosier was just posting up a general note that he'd been lucky enough to get permission on some new hunting grounds... I didn't see anything any different than any other site where guys are posting trailcam pics of big bucks and the site lists there generic location... you don't know whether those pics are from their home county or not, or where in a given county they were taken...
I'm happy for a fellow hunter that is able to hunt new ground...

Fact is, those are hard areas to hunt, thick narrow river cover, big fields, small wood lots, maybe not a ton of deer. Leaves it for the hunters that know they can go days without seeing a deer, but hunt all day for days on end and pull it off eventually. Good luck, man.
