Acting on calls to the statewide Turn in a Poacher (TIP), the Ohio Department of Natural Resources seized 18 sets of whitetail antlers, firearms and other items form four suspects.
But it was this statement by Jonathon Martin to Judge David McKenna of Hillsboro Municipal Court that grabbed the headlines: “I can’t help myself. I’m addicted to killing big deer.”
Between 2004 and 2007, Martin was convicted of illegally killing four monster whitetail bucks. Knowing this, the judge sentenced Martin to 60 hours of community service, revoked his hunting privileges for 20 years and fined him $2,500.

For every guy like this that gets caught, I wonder how many do not?
People like this guy are the biggest single reason we do not see more really big deer.
If you could magically eliminate poaching, we could all kill four bucks per year, and we'd still see more big ones than we do now.

Yea you have to wonder why you don't see that many large bucks while driving.

I never understood why they revoke hunting privileges. It's a good thought, but a guy who poaches isn't going to be afraid to hunt while suspended. It's just like outlawing guns. The guys who shouldn't have them still will.

I don't see much difference between this guy and farmers whacking everything in a soybean field in August with an '06 and a spot light. They just get the DNR's permission. The end result is just the same.

For every guy like this that gets caught, I wonder how many do not? More than you care to know. And its not just big bucks that people kill either. Its just what makes the head lines. That is one of the harsher punishments I have read about though. He should have gotten jail time and a lifetime suspension of license.

ALL DEER MANAGEMENT SHOULD BE DONE THROUGH LEGAL AND NORMAL HUNTING SEASONS. I have never heard of a farmer that allowed adequet hunting pressure needing to take deer in the summer.

A public hanging for the guy probably would help reduce poaching tremendously.

They have to be awfully difficult to catch unless they have a set routine.

Fine should have been ten times what was imposed. He will be back at it again.

Another one gets off light. That is one of the more "severe" ( if that is what you want to call it)punishments I have heard about, but still not near enough.
