My Family & friends think I am nuts, OK they are somewhat right, I am thinking this is a good time to start scouting and patterning deer. Is it to early or do I have the right Idea??? My thinking is I would rather start now then wait until later as now they will have time to calm down before season. I have some people telling me wait until sept but I think that is when I want to start getting out of the woods what is your opinions??? ![]() [/img]

I don't know if you're right or not but that's about what I do. I like to be out of the area for a few weeks.

I like this time of year because the main travel routes are very visable and finding the right place for a stand is alot less complicated.

When you pick a tree for a stand now you can see what it is going to look like when the leaves are down next fall.

As wet as it usually is this time of year, the travel routes are more visible. Deer have settled back in closer to a pattern, and it still isnt so green and grown up that you can miss an area. Don't forget stumbling onto a shed this time of year could be a huge clue to something you may not have considered...

To me its never to early to scout but i do think its to early to pattern them just because nothing has really blommed yet as in the nuts, berries ect, there not there to eat yet like they are when its closer to time to hunt but thats JMO

I went scouting today and saw some predictable travel routes being used. I even jumped a deer in my favorite creek bottom. I have selected a few new trees for my climber and found some great areas to set up for gun season. Scout whenever possible, regardless of the time of year.

Major deer travel routes are very visable this time of the year. Good luck.

What I have found is a travel route between 2 fields that should be soybeans this year. so I figure they will be active this fall as they will have food and the trail runs right beside a river so that should be a good spot.

Locate a funnel & a 4-way intersection between the fields with the wind in your favor for your approach & set-up.

Successful hunters, especially those seeking big bucks scout year round. The more you know about your prey, the more succesful you will be.

I figure that is I do my basic scouting now then in mid sept I get out of the woods then that alows things to calm down before season and I am not in stirring up things during season.
