Decided to try one of Cabela's minnow traps to take along for catching bait on this Scout canoe trip. Never used one before and was wondering what to use for bait? My first thought was a dough ball...any other ideas?

Crumble up cheap old saltine crackers in the trap.

A hand full of dry dog food or a piece of bread works.

Best way to bait minnow trap is to take a piece of cheese cloth and tie up a piece of bread and hang inside the middle of the trap. Keeps the current from washing the bait away and the bait lasts longer. I'm going to set mine as soon as the river goes down. The cats should start to bite good real soon. h.h.

This is what I used to do when I sold minnows back when i was a kid.

Thanks all! This one has a bait bag already as part of the trap so it should be fairly easy to use. Depending on how much rain we get tomorrow I may just set it up in the creek back behind out of curiousity to see what/how it does. Either way with staying at Starve Hollow the couple of nights I should be able to set it out off the dock there and hopefully catch enough to keep us in bait while we fish on the river each day. Will have to check the SC regs but I might even be able to use there when we head over to Beaufort in the fall-if it would catch shrimp there for bait it would pay for itself very quickly.

Used to use one in a small creek as a kid, in the right spot no bait is needed. We fished all summer long using this trap. It was as much fun getting the bait as a kid as it was actually fishing!
Good luck

I catch and keep minnows all summer in the creek behind the house. Make sure you use the bag. I use dog food as well. Set three traps using hamburger about 10 years ago and had snakes in each one of them. Never saw my wife move so fast.

My great Grandpa used saltine crackers. He also would only use the glass jars. He swore the plastic ones scared minnows due to the way they distorted the size of the fish inside. He also would sometimes put some "seed" minnows in the jar to help attract more "minnies" as he called them.
