I got to the woods late, at about 6:15. I set up a Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl and got comfortable. I didn't hear any gobbling, so I just called occasionally.
At about 8:30 I had 10 deer go by at about 75 yards out. I did a couple of bleats for fun and I wasn't doing any good calling turkeys. The last one came in to about 35 yards head bobbing at my decoys, she finally blew and took off.
I sat at that setup until 9:30 and decided to get up and drive by another property. On my way there I see 5 or 6 toms waayyyy out in a corn stubble field on a property I didn't have permission on.
There was a guy cutting wood at a ditch close to the road. I stopped and asked him if he was the landowner, he said no and told me who was and where he lived. I went to the guys house to see if I could get permission and he wasn't there but his wife and daughter told me he was back over there cutting wood. Apparently I had passed him on the road on the way to his house. I drove back over and asked him if I could hunt the turkeys that were just out in his field. He asked who I was and where I was from, and finally told me that no one was hunting there today and I could hunt just for the day. I told him how much I appreciated it and made my plan.
The turkeys had made their way closer to the woods and farther away. So I decided to get in the woods where they couldn't see me and get to the corner and get Pretty boy & girl out again. I made my way to the corner without getting busted by anything. I got the decoys out and spotted a couple of the toms and hoped they didn't spot me. I found a tree about 10 yards into the woods and got my calls out and ran my slate with a few purrs and clucks then some light yelping. The wind was blowing towards them so I thought it would carry the sound down there without having to get too loud.
I got my gun ready and put a call in my mouth. I don't know how long it took them to see my decoys but when I saw them first they were still running. There was three of the them and they ran right through where I planned to shoot. I tried to pick out the biggest one but they almost looked identical so I quit worrying about that. They got spooked by the decoys when they were within about 5 ft of it and took off running again. They were going around the corner of the woods so I had to wait so I could get turned and find another shot. One and two were so close together that I couldn't shoot or I'd have hit both of them and they ran right through my last shooting lane. I clucked with my mouth call and got the last one to stop for just long enough. BOOM! He went down hard.
It all really happened so fast, probably 30 seconds from when I first seen them.
I got him checked in and went to the store and bought the landowner a frozen turkey and took it to them and told them that I really appreciated having permission. It was well received.
He weighed 21 lbs, 23 mm spurs and 9.75" beard.
I am still loving it!! Sorry this was so long.
