For that caliber of a buck I think the mount could have been better.
Looks like he is on dope with his eyes half shut.

Hard to tell much from a picture. He looks a little cross eyed in the straight on view but the side views are't as bad.

Skin alignment is very nice-brisket and armpit area, black stripes on nose lined up on sides and middle, nice wrinkles on the shoulder to neck juncture. Looks like the ears are lined up nicely, the only problem I see there is on the right ear-there is a small tuft of hair sticking out at the notch area-usually caused by not fleshing out the cartilage properly or "splitting the flap of skin along the top edge-ear edges look sharp and straight, not like a wavy potato chip. The form is a 6500 series from McKenzie-probably the finest series of forms available to the public today. The only problem I see is in the eyes-the taxi used a set of what we call "pre-rotated" eyes that were developed by McKenzie a few years ago. The eyes are painted in such a way that a taxidermist can get an eye rotation without drilling the eye sockets for the effect. The eyes are set just like a regular eye, only you put the white band in the front of one eye and at the back of the other. You can also put the white at the rear of both eyes for an extreme forward look. If the white is put in the front of both eyes as seen here it looks like someone hit the deer on the back of the head with a 2x4. Other than that, the work is quite good. Just a shame that the focal point of the mnt. makes you feel like you need to cross your eyes. Most people won't even see the eyes with a rack like that. Any idea what it scored? I guess about 220-230 gross maybe?

Eyes suck, and yes I believe it is the Amish buck....that is my $0.02 worth. He'd take up a lot more room then I have!

I'm still laughing about it. Eyes make or brake a mount, IMO. Most overlooked area by many hack taxidermists if you ask me. I personally don't care for the Ohio board in the back. I don't like boards behind bucks, but that is just my personal taste. Cool if that is what the guy wanted, just not for me is all. I personally don't care for the Ohio board in the back. I don't like boards behind bucks, but that is just my personal taste. Cool if that is what the guy wanted, just not for me is all. I agree. |
