I just got this from the IDNR..
I had heard rumours on other boards about the closing some hunts and sent an email to the IDNR. Here is the answer...
"We are currently experiencing a significant EHD outbreak with significant deer mortality in Southern IN. We do not plan to change the deer hunting regulations for any area this fall.
We have had mortalities reported in 42 counties that would be consistent with EHD. We have collected samples from deer in 16 counties & sent them to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens GA.
We have received reports from 10 deer with 9 positive & 1 negative & 6 reports are pending."

A friend today said he heard a rumor that the INDNR was going to cancel gun season in some counties. I dont see that happening though.

A friend today said he heard a rumor that the INDNR was going to cancel gun season in some counties. I dont see that happening though. As the IDNR said - "We do not plan to change the deer hunting regulations for any area this fall." That will be subject to change next fall though. A couple of the EHD counties from last year had their bonus tag numbers dropped this year. .

The worst thing the DNR can do is give in to the panic and start making big changes with the seasons or limits. In many places it appears EHD has done the job that we couldn't or wouldn't so now that it has happened it makes little sense to manage so that the herd returns to where it was in those areas again.

They haven't done anything, except adjust the numbers downward as far as bonus antlerless permits! A buddy of mine used to have 6 bucks by his house along with several does, this is last summer 2006 around this time last year he stopped seeing them and his neighbor found 33 dead deer. He still has yet to see a deer in the fields or on his property......so should the DNR reduce harvest rates in that county, well yes, and they did!

I think the hunters in those EHD counties need to be conservationists this season. I wouldn't pass on a good buck, but I would definately let the does and small bucks walk.

unless we re-intruduce wolves then we hunters need to do a better job at reducing the deer population.an over populated herd is kept in balance by disease eventually and this is what is happening now

I believe that the deer are tougher and more plentiful than we give them credit for. I know Tennessee got hammered a lot worse than we did and they are setting records on their bow harvest so far. Me? I'll hunt the way I always did. If I am not seeing many deer because of the EHD that will work itself out with less opportunities. I know that the IDNR cut bonus tags in 2007 reflecting the 2006 affected counties and will probably do that again for 2008. You all will recall that the IDNR allowed a record number of bonus tags this year. The EHD is just slowing down the herd growth, not stopping it.

I hope I'm wrong on this, but here in Pike County I'm going to say that at least 65% of adult deer have not made it through this outbreak of EHD. I live out in the sticks and can hunt in my back yard, so I have seen what this desease has done to the adult deer population. I have not seen a buck deer in the last 2-1/2 months. I went from seeing bucks every day to nothing. Its bad.

The farmers are getting with it on getting their crops out of the fields around home and the one that I have talked to have all said they have found dead deer. One farmer that I was talking to said he found a nice buck in his corn field about a 1/2 mile from home. It was a nice one, I'm guessing middle 140's". Between all the dead deer and the bitting bugs, I'm having a hard time getting excited right now. I wish EHD would have affected the mosquito population like it has the deer. I think I may try and put in the effort for a Fall turkey this year with my bow.

In my area in Owen County and Greene County no dead deer I've found. Farmer found 2 dead does about 1 mile away from one Greene County Farm......nothing like some of the other reports or stories.

I haven't heard of any in Greene or any of the surrounding counties but the people I talk to around Evansville are unfortunately experiencing what we had last year.

No, they shouldn't have. Thinking like that is how the population got out of control in the first place. Managing the herd to keep it below carrying capacity is more important than seeing a lot of deer or seeing deer every time you go out.
