ok yesterday afternoon between youth hunts me and my buddy went out to put up the steps for our treestands and do any last minute clearing before season. While walking through our properties we found 5 dead deer between the 2 properties. All of them were lying in the water or very very near it so we assume it is EHD. These are the first deer we have found on our properties and they were not there last week. So I know this is recent. While I don't liek it happeneing to my properties I know it could be worse. My buddies boss brought in the rack of a 160's class 10 pointer that he removed from a deer that died of EHD on his property. All of our dead deer were does and one fawn.

Question for you sleazye-have you contacted the DNR to notify them, and ask if they want the deer for their investigation?

No I had not thought of that. I will call them this afternoon and see if they are interested in them.

If you don't mind my asking: What township of Clay are you hunting. I'm in Washington around Bowling Green. I have checked along river a couple of times but haven't found anything yet.

No I had not thought of that. I will call them this afternoon and see if they are interested in them. If you would-let us know what the DNR says-whether they want to examine the deer or not.

I went out this evening to clean up a trail and do a little squirrel hunting , and I caught the scent of something foul . So I did a little searching and I found a 7 pt buck and two does along the creek bank on the property I hunt. I hunt around the lena area of clay county. Hope I don't come across anything really nice dead in the next few weeks

guys, I don't have any number to back anything, but I'm telling you from what I'm seeing in my hunting woods something has decimated the herd. There are three of us who hunt this 200 acre woods that is connected to about 600 to 700 acres and between us we have seen 4 does and 3 bucks since to start of the season. we have been hunting this property for 15 years and we would regularly see groups of deer totaling 8-12 deer. I am so discouraged right now. how long does it take for new deer to replenish a herd?

Don't feel bad, I hunt in north of Brazil and in souther Parke county and am finding the same thing. I have only saw a doe and her 2 yearlings while in the woods so far. I have had several buddies tell me about finding dead deer. Saw one in Wal-mart last night that told me he found a nice 7 pointer. He said it must have diedin August-September as on 1 tine it still had a little velvet on it. I do not know how long it takes to rebuild a herd but I think that "EHD" has taken a large amount of deer out of the population.

The IDNR has said -"Lots of dead deer being found in Parke and Putnam counties."
Now how many is a "lot" - I don't know.
Jim Mitchell said he will produce a report on this after the season.

That is so sad. I feel very fortunate that my hunting partner and I have found no dead deer so far on his in-laws place in Eastern Putnam County.
I never even considered it until just now-but I`m very relieved that the beautiful 8-pointer, (ok Woody-7 pointer), I killed showed no signs of having had EHD.

I don't know how m any lots is either. I mentioned in another post that the wildlife biologist I talked to estimated that at the rate the deer were dying that Parke and Vemillion counties may lose (or in this case have lost) up to 70% of the deer population. I know that I still see deer on my property (although nothing like I was seeing last year or the year before) but then again I hunt a funnel that connects 3 other properties so a lot of deer pass through there.
